Hey everyone,

Can you guys ID and give me a possible solution for this algae that started popping up a couple days ago? The tank has been cycled for about 3 weeks now. 6 fish in there now (3 chromis and 3 anthias). It's 180g.

What are your params? Also do you use tap or RODI water? Do you have a CUC or clean up crew? Also whats your light cycle? Turbo snails would clean that up but try reducing your feeding and water changes after scrubbing it with a toothbrush, or invest in some gfo. Just what has worked for me. Best of luck

Sorry I didn't get back sooner.

Params are as follows:

Salinity is at 35-36PPM measured by a calibrated refractometer.

I use RODI and have a small CUC. My light cycle is 11am (2) actinics, 12pm all lights, 7pm (2) actincs 8pm lights out.

Algae seems to be getting worse. I've read of some phosphate reducers that I can use, would that be recommended?

I'm currently feeding about half a cube of mysis mixed with a little vitamins.

I am never one to vote for a somewhat nuclear option. (ask anyone) But with no coral in there you might want to consider Vibrant for that. itll kill the algae and lower the nutrints a bit. Snails and lowering nutrients will help keep it mowed and under control, but as its brand new you might just want to KILL it while its easy to do and not have it lurking.

Are there fish in the tank yet. Looks like some new rock. If there aren't critters yet it could just be some hair algea eating off the extra nutrients from your cycle. If that's the case just leave it alone and don't add anything for a couple more weeks and it should dissapear all by itself

Yes, there's 5 fish in the tank now.

Is it possible to have GHA and have phosphate at 0? Just bought a Salifert test kit at a LFS and it's showing 0.

Quick question, the powder agent is all clumpy, is it supposed to look like that?

yes, the gha(like GFO) is srtipping the water of PO4. If you took GFO out you would then see the PO4 in the system. even if the PO4 is really low, algaes will still use nutrints and photosynthesis to stay alive. More so than corals.
Po4 BTW binds to surfaces, its likely why its found a happy place on those rocks. A constant source of Phosphates even in lower amounts and possibly a good carbon source.

the good news is I dont think you have Po4 levels that high. I had a LOT of Bryopsis a while back but still registered phosphate on my tests, so I don't think you have that much in your system.

I dont know about the test powder.
