Going on a new tank build I plan to want to keep tangs in it. Is a tank 96L 24W and 18D sufficiant for most tangs. Sand bed will be 1 to 2 inches.

That should be good for MOST tangs. The 96" length is great but the 24" width ought to limit you to those specimens that max out at 12-15". With rock work in there it may get a little snug for fish to turn around comfortably and the relatively short height gives them little up and down movement. Granted tangs are more of a foreword swimming fish than an all over type, maneuvering will be tight for the really large ones

Agree you should be limited to tangs with 1 foot max size or smaller preferably. That's the vast majority of tangs (at least in the hobby). Some acanthurus tangs like dussumeri that grow very quickly may not be good choices, and I would also avoid unicorn tangs. 9/10 species you'll be fine with. Perhaps more. I have tons of tangs in my 180s. My next tanks will be 8-10 footers.
