I'm interested in your opinion...what are the negatives to owning a reef tank?

Expense...
Backache...
Difficult going on vacation...
Anxiety that something is about to go wrong...
Spending years creating something which can be destroyed in minutes...
Unhappy partners...
Floods...
Pests...
Disease
Weird smells...
Having something die and no idea why?
Relentless testing ( I don't actually mind this bit)

Anymore you can think of?

I can tell my wife is a little bit jealous of the time I spend with my tank lol. She's always got some comment about me just staring at it! Also, the expense, it really is pricey!!

You forgot the all important one... the negative impact we have on the reefs dude... ( this was said in a surfers kind of accent/voice, being 100% joking). lol

According to certain Govt's naive point of view that's the biggest negative. But you covered the basics.

The way its broken down, we must all be insane to willingly do all this, and be proud of it when the day ends! ... Like look at my beautiful glass box of personal & financial misery!

Money spent and stress. I’m a worrier. I can’t help it. I always have been. I obsess over everything. It’s providing as much stress in my life as the tank provides joy. Go figure.... but I love my tank!

Mine is definitely the always fear of a leak. I'm overly paranoid about this and when my ATO goes off, it's always in the back of my mind.

I currently manually dose my Alk and Ca. My alkalinity is dosed daily and my calcium is weekly. I'm thinking I'm going to dose both daily starting next week. This has become a pain, but I'm not sure how I'd set up my doser since it's all new to me. But manually dosing can get in the way, especially when I leave town for the weekend.

Most of the ladies just don't get it! :p

Really hampers the dating life. :D

I'm nervous about taking an extended vacation. No LFS or tank sitters in my area so I would have to rely on the kids that no longer live with us. It's hard to trust all of your hard work and caring to somebody that doesn't understand your passion. I know they would do their level best but there is that CVS receipt list of do's and dont's that worries me.

Definitely unhappy partner. My wife wants to budget me at $100/month, between coral, fish, and any other needs (foods, additives, etc., etc.) Doesn’t matter if it’s a fish or coral I’ve wanted all my life, the answer is no! Has anyone ever gotten divorced over spending money on aquariums is another question? I’m a little tired of being told what I can spend money on or how much I can spend! I’m not a big spender, but she’s certainly a tight butt with money. Are we rich? No, not even close, but we’re not broke...sorry, a little rant .
