Nem for the Clowns

What size tank?
What lights?
Current parameters?
Sandbed depth?
H. crispa or H. malu for the "sebae"
What, if any, corals in the tank?
How long has the tank been set up?
What other fish/inverts in there?

Currently a 20L and a 5 gallon pico that I am moving into a 75 (48x18) DT, 40B sump, DIY LED (ReefLEDLights Phoenix 47 x 2). Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate >5ppm(API test is tough to read, but it is a somewhere between 0-5ppm in the colors), CA+ 440 ppm, Alk 10, haven't done a Mg test in a while. My system has been running for 6 months and the live rock was taken from a local reefer's system that was up for a year prior. I also have had the rest of the rock for the 75 cooking in my garage for the last month. Since I am moving in a month and don't plan to add the nem until the move is done and the parameters are stable. As far as the sebae, I was thinking about a blue tip H. Crispa. Corals: I currently have a few different zoanthids, favia, green star polyps, red candy monti caps, and xenia. I have a few more that I will add once moved. I have ora red planet, hammer coral, tequilla sunrise monti, monti setosa, and a seriatophora (All of these will be added once I move). Fish: YWG, Orchid dottyback, pair of Picasso clowns and a purple firefish. Inverts:tiger pistol, brittle star, peppermint shrimp, various snails(nerite, nassarius, cerith), blue leg hermit, emerald mithrax crab.

If its your first nem then bubble tip, I have both in my 55. The hard part about sebaes is finding a healthy one. I have had two, one died within two days, the other is doing great. Here's the first one when I bought it

Notice the short tenticals? That's its way of getting food because the lfs did not have enough light, also notice how bleached it is? It was being sold as an all white H. Crispa. They are never healthy and all white, this was my first
Now here is my healthy large sebae, it is a dark tan with large tenticals,

here are the clowns in it

as you can tell they love it, they have not taken to the bubble tip in the tank, I think that's because the sebae is their ideal home, here's the bubble tip

The concern I see (( and good to be waiting until the 75 is up, no need to cause extra stress )) is that the pistol shrimp will be digging all over the place. While some H. crispas can be found on the rocks, most are going to prefer the sandbed -- will could be an issue with the pistol. I know that with my pistol (( tiger BTW )), I went with an E. quadricolor -- rock dwelling -- so I wouldn't have to worry.

Yeah I'll probably go with a bubble tip, but I have some time. I have learned that everything in this hobby takes a lot of time. Now as far as rbta and green go, is one hardier than the other? I like the look of the rose better.

Assuming that you start with a healthy one to begin with, there shouldn't be any difference in their care.

It seems that when one has a particular color in mind they (( might )) over look some issues because they finally found the color morph they have been looking for, which could lead to it appearing to be less harder. This isn't as common with E. quadricolors as with Haddonis or Gigs, but does still happen.

Ha.

Tightly closed mouth. Solid color --- transparent pink is slightly bleached red one. No damage to the foot.
"bubble" tips isn't a sign of heath, no one has been able to concretely reproduce a reason that they will have/not have them.

The key is getting it -- hopefully the LFS (( or where ever you get it from )) is careful when removing it, hopefully not deep in a rock crevice -- sometime better to buy the rock too.

I would like to add, ask your LFS how long he has had it. Try not to buy one that has just come in. Some anemones are weak and half starved by the time we have the opportunity to buy one. A healthy anemone, usually, will eagerly accept food.

Unfortunately I don't live near any good LF stores. I typically have to get my livestock online or drive to Atlanta or Knoxville 2 hrs away.

If you have to order online, I would stick with sites that offer more than an arrive alive guarantee and do What You See Is What You Get -- Personally I would never purchase an anemone online without seeing a picture of the actual one.

Liveaquaria.com is a good sight they have a wide selection of wysiwyg

I always see pictures of people's clowns hosting a nem...why hasn't mine done it?
