This is an interesting read!

I would like to get some of these into my 120g tank ;)

You already have.

The issue is, the article is wrong. They don’t ‘produce their own light’. The fluorescent proteins ‘glow’ when stimulated with the correct wavelengths of light.

For green fluorescent protein- that wavelength is royal blue.

Guess why people say their corals ‘pop’ when under ‘actinic’ lighting?

If you want to see this effect best- use an orange filter to view your tank with ‘blues’ on. This will let the fluorescent green come through, while filtering out the blue. You will literally get the same images that photographer dies in the article.

Source- bioscientist that uses fluorescent proteins to tag and track cell development in living animals.
