I have a slight Dino outbreak due to pulling all of my rock out of the tank and going fallow. Going to be out of town for a few days and wanted to get my nitrate and phosphate dosing going. I don’t have a dedicated dozer, but I was wondering if I could put it in the ATO to be dosed over the week. Let me know if this is a stupid idea.

I feel like over time fresh water that’s full of nitrates and phosphates will start growing algae and bacteria. Whether it will grow too much in a week I’m not sure, but I certainly don’t think that this would really be a good long term plan.

I would also worry about trying to dial in the right dose. As you’re starting to dose nitrates and phosphates you really should be testing daily to help get the dose right. If you haven’t been doing that then you could come back to discover that it has been way overdosed or way under dosed.

I think you’re probably just better off waiting until you get back.

Yeah plus when you start dosing it will take a few days to even register any increase in numbers. Just wait till you get back to start dosing and it will be fine if you took everything out of the tank. Another thing that comes to mind if the tank is follow and don’t have corals in there maybe do a blackout during your trip away (if you have corals I wouldn’t advise this).

FWIW, I'm not a huge fan of those products since the concentration and purity and composition is unknown. Food grade sodium nitrate and phosphate are, IMO, better choices.

Switched to sodium phosphate from loudwolf and it only takes 5.5 grams to mix into 1 gallon. Best decision i made. It only takes 1 ml twice a day to keep phosphates at 0.03. This will last me months and months. Before I would be using 6 ml three times per day to be at 0 phosphates with neophos. I'm gonna finish using whats left of the neonitro and then switch over to food grade.
