neonitro as no3 supplement currently dosing 80ML per day..

i had a low no3 problem in my 300 gallon system and had a target rate of 10ppm. well i haven't tested in a while and tested the other day because the sps corals looks super pale and dry.. my n03 dropped to .5ppm. now i got neonitro and for the past 10 days have been dosing 80ml per day in order to get the n03 up. it is working great my no3 is now 8ppm. for the last 4 days my n03 has been stable 8ppm but it is taking 80ml per day which is alot..

is this normal consumption and can anybody recommend a lab grade substance that i can replace with the neonitro. i would like to bring my n03 now to 15ppm but it would take a **** ton of neonitro ...

i also do have a hair algy outbreak so im wondering if the algy is sucking up the n03 or if its indeed the corals. the corals are also consuming about 6ppm a day of calcium so i know my tank demands are very high.. but 80ml neonitro seems like alot per day...

Is there a reason to target 15ppm? Most of us keep nitrates in the 1-5 range if not lower. I’m unable to distinguish between shades of pink on nitrate test kits so for me it’s a binary test either 0 or detectable which is what I aim. Anything above 0 should be ok for your corals in most cases.

You want to keep N and P in somewhat of a balance but other than that I would aim for a range rather than a specific number. Most likely won’t hurt to go to 15 or above but no reason for it.

What are your phosphates at? In my experience, hair algae seems to grow better when there are higher phosphates.

my GHA is out of control. my phos is only .02 though..

Kill the gha with fluconazole.
It will spike the no3. So be prepared to stop dosing. I would anyway as you’re feeding the gha

Most use stump remover for bulk dosing. (Easy google)
If you want a pharma grade chem, look up the active ingredient in that. I’m not familiar with it.

In addition, I think Neo Nitro states "proprietary nitrogon salts" as an ingredient. I think that is a fancy way of saying Sodium Nitrate(NaNO3). The other alternative would be Potassium Nitrate(KNO3). Both can be found in pharma or food grade. Your first source would be Ebay for those powders. There are also online calculators. As salty stated, Stump Remover from Home depot is a quick solution. It's something I use but people give a lot of grief due to contaminants. It truly isn't the cleanest but in dilution it hasn't shown me any issues towards live stock.

I also don't think it's always necessary to target specific numbers for N or P. However, maintaining both can have positive impacts. The balance would be that an increase in P could mean a decrease in N. And then vise versa. You could also dose Potassium Phosphate(I use Seachem Phosphorus) or feed more coral foods. . So with that, if you are N deficient, dosing nitrates or adding more fish is the solution.

In your case, killing gha with flucon and seeing where nitrates are should give you your next step.
