Is it necessary to go with the gold package over the regular one ?

If you want to monitor salinity (conductivity) then yes. When I got my apex I added the pm2 and probe to monitor it since the gold wasn't available yet.

So your saying that it's worth the extra 350 bucks ?
Yes, you will spend more getting the regular Apex, then find out that you would like the lab probes and conductivity. You take the hit up front with the gold, but you get more. I was thinking the same and did the math and saved up for the gold.

The standard apex full is 525. But that's with a standard ph probe. The gold comes with lab grade probes (ph, orp, conductivity)

If monitoring all 3 of those is something you want then yes, I'd say it's worth the extra cost ( I think it's more like $275 difference)

I think it would be nice to monitor salinity !! But what is the orp ?

They also sell a standard apex with lab grade probe for 545. It does not however monitor salinity.

Yesterday I just bought an Apex full with the lab grade probe and it was $550.00. To upgrade to the Gold, all it added was the PM2 and the salinity probe. Not worth the extra $250.00 imo when I only need to really check the salinity once a week. If ever it is off, it's only off by .001 ppm, not a significant loss even for sps.
