Neptune COR-20 First Impressions

I take it there was a nick in the o-ring, then? It could also be a defect in the plastic housing keeping the o-ring from sealing properly.

Even if they had wet tested, it looks like the leak is pretty slow, so they probably wouldn't have caught it.

Quick update here - the COR 20 has been running for about 4 months. I have a Beananimal setup and about a month ago, I noticed the water level dropping in the overflow. The two things that can cause that are either increased flow in the siphon standpipe (really unlikely unless you adjust the gate valve,) or decreased flow from the return pump. I figured it was probalby some buildup on the inside of the pipe, so I logged into Fusion and increased the pump flow from 70% to 72%. That fixed it for a few days, then it got worse again, so I increased it again to 75%.

After the flow dropped again, I took the pump out and cleaned it by running it in a 50% vinegar solution for several hours. That improved the flow, but whithin a week it had dropped again so that I had to increase the power to 80% (14% over baseline.) I removed the pump again and completely disassembled it. There was some pretty minor buildup on the impeller blades as well as on the shaft/magnet of the impeller and in the housing. I cleaned it with a toothbrush, rinsed it off and replaced the pump. The flow is back to what it originally was and I have the power setting back down to 70%. I didn’t write down all the readings before, but the pump is currently running at 70%, 61W, 2310 RPM, 60% temp. I’ll keep an eye on it over time and see how it changes.

It’s normal for pumps to reqauire periodic cleaning, but seeing a 15% drop in flow in less than 4 months seems a bit excessive. It’s certainly more than I saw with my Varios6 or Fluval SP4. Has anyone else had issues like this?

Great review. I have had my Cor20 since February and run it on a Red Sea Reefer 250. I am running at 85 percent and running it on a manifold and using 2 valves for Refugium and Frag tank. It's pushing head room prolly 7-8 feet above on main floor to display.

So far very reliable...
Here's how I have it running:

I see you have a flow meter on yours - have you noticed any reduction in flow since setting it up?

Except for the flow drop-off mine's been perfect. The flow drop-off isn't a huge deal; it was certainly easy enough to clean, I was just a bit surprised how soon it needed to be done. We'll see how long it takes before the next cleaning.

2 times I noticed the flow rate went down about ten percent. I had some slime growing in my sump due to Nopox dosing, so I attribute the slow down and need for cleaning to that, since then no issues...

I have had my COR 20 installed for 2 days. I have to say that while this is my first DC pump I am very impressed with that fact that it is truly a silent pump. I r eplaced the Sicce Syncra 3.0 which was quiet this is on a different level and It is actually silent. The only way I know it is on is the flow of water.

I have mine supplying a Red Sea Reefer 250 with 3/4 “ line. I did change out the stock barb connection with a larger 3/4” barb . I also made a manifold that is feeding a reactor and flowing water back into the sump where I have my DOS supplying my Calcium and ALK to confirm it mixes well. This replaced a small pump I was using for this purpose. With all that I am running it at 30%. So this pump would is future proof if I move up to a larger tank. I have the apex and really like the RPM value listed in fusion. I think I will be able to use this to let me know when I need to clean the pump. I also like the IQ feature which limits the speed of the pump. This is a great safety feature for smaller tanks like mine.

I do thave a question. Do you guys find a sound coming from the control box? I only hear it when When I am in the electrical equipment section of my stand and I don’t think the average person would hear it with a cabinet door closed, but I want to confirm this is just not a problem with my unit.

I chose this pump over the Varios 6 symply because I have the Apex, but either way I feel it is an awesome pump and have no reservations about recommending it for you.

My only suggestion for Neptune is they should extend the warranty on this unit to match the 2 year warranty the Varios 6 has.
A 1-year warranty on a pump of this price? This conveys little confidence from Neptune and is almost a deal-breaker for me. Another variable :)

Good morning, so I wanted to give you an update on the COR 20. It has been running perfectly for over a year now. It is so quiet and It is very easy to clean. I do wish that Neptune would increase the warranty to two years just because it would keep them on par with the Varios but so far I am extremely satisfied.
