Hi all, I am planning a 2nd tank - RSR 525 XL. Being in Sydney Australia I need a chiller in summer and are planning to run a Hailea HC-300 for this tank. I run a HC-150 for my existing RSR 250 which works a treat. In my current tank the chiller is plumbed with an Aquael Circulator 1500 which is nominally rated at 1500 L/H. I run it around 60% of full flow, which suits the HC-150 well (it is rated for 250-1200 L/H).

In the new tank I plan to run a COR-20 return and am thinking of running a 2nd COR-20 as the chiller pump. This is so I can swap it in as a spare return if needed. The HC-300 chiller is rated for 1000-2500 L/H). I believe the COR-20 can be throttled down to 15% of output which would be 1125 L/H nominal, within the HC-300 rating.

What do you think about this?
Is the COR-20 going to be too overpowered for the chiller?

I’m not familiar with that chiller specifically, but many of them are quite restrictive to flow because the native connections are small. You may find that the COR loses a lot of flow. I use a tradewinds model on my large tank primarily because they have much larger native plumbing. My 3/4 HP unit is 1 1/2” piping.
