In under 2 years I have had the Computer fail, Trident fail, and Two Cor20 power blocks fail. Widgets locking in the on position as well. From my experience this is not a product made to last. The customer service is prompt and what it should be. The leak detectors saved from emergencies and when its working things are good. My hobby requires a 6.5 natural gas generator to keep secure. I'm willing to pay for something reliable and quality for my system. I have the Hydros wave controller, the thing is robust and seems made to last. Does anyone recommend the switch as I'm ready to garbage this apex stuff.

Are you running your apex off a generator?

Without getting too complicated, most standard emergency generators product electricity with high total harmonic distortion THD. High THD is a no no for sensitive electronic equipment like computers, ........you have to find out what THD your generator product. You need to have a generator product less than 5% THD

It is simply a back up power in case of an outage. Just highlighting my effort to create a stable and secure environment. Interesting advice I will look into it.

Any links or info for a battery to add to this loop?

Funny, I decided to junk my 2 month old Apex Jr and 832 Power bar tonight because it, once again, died for no reason and I just happened to notice the return pump had shut off before I went to bed. Can't have so much vital equipment dependent on something so flakey. Tried all manner of rebooting/resetting etc., all to no avail. Something died, and I'm just not willing to continue to endanger my livestock by such unreliable, in my experience, equipment. (This is the third time this or something similar has happened) I was advised early on by my LFS to go with individually controlled outlet power strips instead of the Neptune stuff but I didn't listen. YMMV, but for me, I've had enough!

7 years and not a single failure to date.

Hydros on the other hand, multiple DOA pieces and 2 failed XP8s in less than a week. Not to mention the pH was completely unreliable since the system couldn’t handle my halide ballasts. It had serious interference issues. Apex doesn’t have any issues with the halide ballasts.

This generator has less than 5%

I also wasn’t planning on doing an apex on this system. But friends and store owner sold me on the convenience. But the inconvenience of large system failures has now made me think. My old coral view digital power centres have never failed me. I have 6 of them of varying ages back 15 years. First one I bought was 20 bucks. I also have cheap returns that are running and haven’t been cleaned for 3 years. Torn on how to proceed. But im glad to relate.

I feel your pain. This last time, both my units went out in the same week. I don't believe in coincidence. One of them recently came back because the graphs weren't showing up for almost a month till I sent it in. I have too much money invested in these systems to switch. I still have a Trident and DOS that went in for service and I haven't hooked back up just because I fear what error message I'm going to get. I love it WHEN it works.

Wow. Okay. That’s not promising. I find people either love the apex or have hard feelings.

I get the money thing I feel the same. But I believe the next thing will spark a change. Just trying to figure out what it will be. I held a kh director last weekend. It doesn’t feel like a children’s toy.

I looked up the model 6998 6kw. To have<5%. I emailed the electrician to confirm. If this is the case can I rest assured the generator won’t fry my equipment? Thankyou

Standby? They should generally be less than 5%. If you want a backup battery to filter the power, what you want to look for is a “line interactive” upc. They fix the voltage without switching over to battery power like most upcs.

"Your Generac generator produces less than 5% THD. I’ve attached a copy of the specs which highlights this on page 1 where is states “True Power Electrical Technology” followed by the details on distortion."

It is in case of long power outages which is practically never. But I don't want a dead reef if it happens.

I have 2 Neptune system. One has been running for 6 years and one has been running 4 years. Nothing failed except the yearly change of the Ph and temp probes. People has to treat the Neptune system as a computer devices and at least put some kind of surge protection into the sytem to protect it. Or better connect connect to a UPS.
