I’m banging my head over here to understand my APEX Neptune results. Just had my LFS come out and calibrate the Neptune after it had some wonkeyness going on and for the last two weeks it’s been on the money.
But last night I watched my alk go from 8.7 to 9.8 over night so it says. And that’s without the doser dosing anything is there a way to calibrate it or am I better off ignoring this result and letting it retest itself? Nothing else was added/changed besides kicking on the protein skimmer but surely that wouldn’t change it right?

So the Apex doesn't measure alk. Do you mean the Trident? If so, then yes, you can calibrate it. In fact, Neptune includes the calibration solution with the Trident refills.

What do you dose?

Yes the trident. And it’s been calibrated and hasn’t been an issue until literally this morning with the bad results

I am a big fan of Neptune Systems and use it on both of my tanks. I have found when a sensor shows a swing like that, that is usually something going on in my sump where the sensors are. Microbubbles and algae usually throw my readings off. As someone mentioned, I calibrate my Trident with the solution they provide when I replace my reagants. No issues for me so far.

Not to answer a question with a question but you noted having your LFS come over and calibrate then later asked if it is something you can do. Why did they come out? I'm asking because I'm not sure if this is something you are comfortable with or if they do maintenance for you, etc.

  • What reagents are you using?
  • How did the LFS calibrate and what reference solution?
  • Yes, you can calibrate it. It is easy assuming you have a calibration fluid left.
  • If not - you can order Fauna Marin multi reference solution or Neptunes - both are good. I always keep 2 bottles of FM on hand
  • I don't chance numbers or test kits as that can lead to other questions - see what your next test result reads and reply. Doesn't hurt to see what next results are - in my opinion before doing anything else.

You’re good! I have them on a monthly schedule and when the last guy came out he somehow messed up the trident and they had to come back and fix it/recalibrate it

I’m using the reagents that came with it. My LFS gave me a six month supply when I did the contract.
The used the provided calibration solution and the results from the water via Hanna.
Yeah I’ve turned off the doser to be on the safe side today just to watch everything before I do anything. My LFS is set to come back out Thursday anyways so I’m going to have them take a look at it and see if it’s something with the trident again.

Ok, thanks for the information. How have the readings been since then?

The Neptune was correct! So by me turning on my skimmer for the first time this week it dropped my nitrates which in turn rose the ALK. Good thing my tank is still very new so I won’t have any massive coral die off over this. Getting my fuge setup this week so I can keep everything more stable!
