Hello,
I am at the moment only a freshwater keeper however I enjoy researching SW and really enjoy the animals involved with it.
When it comes to freshwater snails in the hobby, there’s not much new information you can tell me about them. Of course I learn everyday in the hobby, but I’ve got snails down pretty good.
Anyways, here’s the situation:
I am currently on vacation and found that there are wild nerites living in the intercoastal where I am staying, and I thought it would be pretty cool to find one and take it home with me (I checked, species is not struggling or endangered, and I took the snail from a fishing spot. Also we’re about 50 miles north of the recorded habitation of this species so it’s probably not even supposed to be here)
Now for FW nerites most commonly kept ones are in the genus Neritina, which is known well for being able to live in fresh, salt and all in between. I had assumed it would be the same for the other genuses in the nerite family, but I’m realizing I might be wrong on that now.
The wikipedia page for Neritidae (correct my spelling if I’m wrong, not as great with families) says that the genus Nerita is marine only. However, in the little I could find about the species, I saw two other sources that said they could live in brackish and fresh as well.
“This species is found in brackish, fresh and marine waters in the supra- and intertidal areas.”
“N. fulgurans prefers brackish water”
So I guess I’m just asking: Anyone who knows the saltwater side of nerites better than me, can this specific snail be adapted to live in FW? Because if it can’t I’m going to let it go, and I’d rather not be unsure and risk it if it’s just going to kill it.
