My display tank is currently fallow. I had a quarantine tank up and running for 7 years continuously, and it ended up being a crappy looking display tank when my 120 gallon had a leak. The only inhabitants were from the display tank, who had already gone through quarantine, so I thought I was golden. As I was cycling my new Nano cube, I opted to get a new clownfish to pair with the one I had for 7+ years. I made the decision not to quarantine, fearing that the new clown would turn female during that period of time. BIG MISTAKE.
The juvenile clown disappeared the first night, after seeming to get along with my female all day. I wrote it off as some sort of altercation when the tank lights went out. I took a couple of the rocks from the constantly running quarantine and put them in the new Nano. A few days later, my 7 year old clown started acting weird. My mind just never went to the juvenile clown giving her a disease until her last day, when she was losing color, refusing food, and gasping for air.
So my former quarantine tank had to run fallow (although, I am just throwing it out at this point), and my new display tank, which never had a single fish is also fallow because a few fist sized rocks came from the diseased tank. I am planning a 10 week fallow period from the date I last added rock, and I am terrified that it won't be enough or I calculated wrong or that I moved something else from the quarantine tank without remembering.
