Netted my Foxface and white dots appear

There are three tanks at my place.

I've netted my foxface today and put him into qt. He never had any signs of ich when he was living in my 20 gallon.

I moved him to my qt today. He's stressed and immediately around 15 white dots appeared on his body.

Are they ich?

From the picture, it is impossible to tell whether the spots are 2D or 3D. 3D would be more worrisome.

As I am sure you know, Foxface's are very quick to display stress visually.

Wait a day, see if the spots go away or move. It may just be the stress displaying unevenly.

She has about 5 different color modes she’ll do depending on mood- one of those is jet black with brown mottles. Another is brown with cream colored patches about the size of a long grain rice.

When o transferred her from QT1 to QT2, using a plastic colander, she had white circles that matched the holes. Lasted for about 8 hours in the new QT. Scared the crap out of me. But all good.

I’d wait it out fir a day. It may just be some color change due to stress of being netted, abs the chromatophores in Her skin reacting to physical touch. They’ll return to normal soon. They are not raised on the skin.

If they look raised, or don’t go away very soon, or you don’t think that’s the explanation- I’m not versed enough on diseases to diagnose from that pic. Someone else might be able to ID though

Wow Neil thank you for the detailed explanation. It doesn’t look like there are bumps so it may just be what you’ve said.

Its going to go through copper anyways.

I am new to saltwater so I am just trying to see what ich looks like.

No problem. It’s a steep learning curve and any help is valuable. Particularly when the lives of the livestock are potentially at risk.

What was the reason for netting initially? From DT to QT? Did you see signs of disease in other fish or just precautionary?

FWIW- looks too big to be ich to me, but I don’t have extensive experience with it fortunately.

The basic appearance of ich would look like salt granules stuck to the side of the fish.

Velvet would appear as a fuzzy coating on the fish but looks like a powdered sugar all over.

If the spots are not raised off of the fish I would watch him for a day.

I have three tanks in total, One small tank that I toyed with initially, one quarantine tank and one 180g display tank.


Before putting anything into the new 180, I want all fish to be clean. That’s why I net the fish to QT.

I had three clownfish, a lawnmower blenny and this foxface in my tank. I had all the fish for at least two months. None have shown any signs of ich or velvet.

Clownfish does have white poop but still eating.

I don’t know if I’m overreacting but I want to be sure. What do you think about this?

If the clownfish had stringy white poop then he needs to be treated with General Cure mixed into his food (use focus to bind) and use Garlic guard or something to mask the taste of the meds.

The clown may have internal parasites so this might be a good opportunity to treat him for it in QT and due an observation period on them to be sure.
If the clown has internal parasites the others may also because fish will eat each other’s poop.
