Never done this before

Hello, I am in my fifties and need a new hobby to keep myself busy. Not sure if this is for me. Worried that it may be too much investment of time and I may not be able to keep up. Please help making the decision.
Good morning, welcome to the gateway. it is interesting to think about getting involved. when i started thinking about it. i had a couple of Labradors, a cat, a chinchilla, and some freshwater fish. i really had enough pets to keep me busy. over the next few months i lost the dogs and the cat. the time i spent caring for them, and the cost of food, supplies, and vet visits were more than this hobby requires. the other factor was that i retired myself and had time and flexibility to devote to learning and doing. I would suggest visiting a fish store and seeing if you are attracted to the things there. if you have any friends who have saltwater tanks, ask to go over and see their set ups and let them tell you about their experiences, look through the forum here as to what is possible and ask the R2R community. there is no need to commit large amounts of time and money to "Think About Reefing". are you an 'examine and explore' decision maker or more a 'Dive right in' sort? I have dropped a bit of money into this but i enjoy it every day. i had the chance to go on a 5 day Caribbean cruise. i spent what i would have spent on that and bought a TV that i enjoy every time i turn it on. I have the time and money to spend and i spend some of it on reefing. I hope you make a decision that reflects who you are and what brings you satisfaction.
Being in my 60's i factor in how much time i have to enjoy what i am building. being a decade younger think of the time you will have to see your creation evolve.

Welcome to R2R. It’s a big decision to make and can be expensive. I bought my first tank with little knowledge and asked LFS for advice. I then watched lots of videos on YouTube (still do). I then found R2R and it’s my first go to when I have a question or want to learn something. I’ve taken a few chances with corals and fish choices which luckily have worked out fine. I’ve lots some fish and some corals over time but no major tank crashes.
Backtothereef gave some good advice, as did others.
I hope you decide to go for it.
Lots of knowledgeable and helpful people here who will support and advise you when needed.

Welcome to R2R and happy reefing!

I am 55 and an essential worker who started with saltwater about last February after a long hiatus from freshwater- it can definitely be done! It's very rewarding and relaxing.
Welcome to the R2R family!

Reefing is a great hobby but it does require some time commitment. The cool thing is you can see all your hard work paying off. I’m in my 50s as well and I would encourage you to think about making water changes etc easy on yourself. Hauling buckets of water from the lfs or up and down stairs gets old pretty fast.
