I have been battling red cyano ( I believe) for the best part of 6 months, I originally thought it was due to excess nitrates and phosphates. I addressed this with a refugium and a reactor with gfo which has brought down both the phosphates and nitrates however the battle is ongoing. Any suggestions or advice or do I just admit defeat ??

Steps taken
  • Increased flow all over
  • Removed all the algae from the sand and rock works and have blacked out the tank only for it to return.
  • Removed white spectrum light
  • Removed red spectrum light
  • GFO reactor
  • Refugium with chaeto
  • Dosed nopox (now not dosing)
Parameters
  • 525litre
  • Salinity 1.025
  • PH 7.8-8.1
  • Alkalinity 8dkh
  • Magnesium 1360
  • Calcium 420
  • Phosphates 0
  • Nitrates 1.5ppm
  • Feed one cube frozen food per day

i'd highly recommend Vibrant. I've used on my older existing tank vs Cyano and Dino's and again with a newer 200G tank. If the outbreak get's pretty bad, i'll use it 2x per week (1x per week is their reco for a "dirty" tank. Works wonders and no visible problems with corals or fish.

Here is something to consider. Indonesian Trochus snails. My nutrients became imbalanced which lead to a nasty cyano outbreak and because my tank is SPS dominant I didn't want to try any chemicals that could potentially harm my colonies. I read trochus snails eat it....I took the risk an ordered 25 for my 300 Gallon from Live Aquaria. I received them yesterday and wow...where ever cyano is they are. This morning I took a look and my tank has improved big time. It is important they are from Indonesia, my understanding are the ones from Nicaragua aren't nearly as effective. I hope this helps.
