Hi,
So over the last few weeks, my DT had a brook outbreak and it wiped out all my fish except for one, which I have moved to a QT tank and am successfully treating with paraguard.
During the outbreak my tank was in the middle of a 2 month diatom bloom and even after i removed all fish the diatom bloom is still lingering (3 weeks fallow). I have a light on the tank that I'm sure is fueling the bloom, but when should i expect to see the bloom to end? I have 2 snails, 2 hermit craps, 2 red crabs and an urchin in the 30 gallon tank, but doesn't seem like they can keep up with the bloom. I've had green algae build on the rocks for over a month now, which i thought was supposed signify the end of the diatom bloom, but instead i now have both?
I use RODI water (i must say - the local water here is very hard) but am starting to think that it isn't able throughly cleanse my water. I also do weekly water changes, which probably introduces more silicates, but am I supposed stop doing this until the bloom dissipates?
Am i missing something? Or do diatom blooms sometimes last for several months?? Could the brand of salt i am using be adding to the trouble?
Thanks in advance for your input!
