Hi all,

My yellow tang has a weird white area in the front portion of his fin just before his head. He’s around 15. Never seen anything like this before. He’s had ich a few times over the years with no problems. This is weird. It’s not cottony looking, or bacteria like. It looks like it got white paint on it. He is also having trouble floating and breathing fast. Worried my baby is getting old.

No tank changes in a long time and everything and everyone else is normal.

The white patch is unfamiliar. Any guess how fast that developed?

What is familiar is that crew cut dorsal and tail fin. Mine looks like that. He got beat on pretty good by a purple before I could trap it. At least I assumed it was the beating but now not so sure it wasn't something else as it never grew back. The purple did some time upstate but is back now, and they are getting along well now that a PBT is tank boss.

Do you know how/why your yellow sports the crew cut?

15 years is a good run; hope you get several more.

But that doesn’t explain the floating and heavy breathing issues. I know you stayed there’s been no changes to the tank recently, and tests are all good. Maybe it’s an injury? Is he still eating?

Thanks all,

He stopped eating. Gonna grab some black worms but I’m not hopeful. I know they live along time. I’m wondering if old age is setting in. He’s had a good life overall, I hope,

I have a purple and Vlamingi also about same age. They all stopped fighting years ago, but the yellow fins never grew back completely.

I can’t remember a time I ever had a tank without a yellow

Sorry to hear that. It could be old age I suppose. Does he have a yellow growth on his eye ball or just the reflection in the image?

Reflection. I’m beginning to think that the white may not be anything of concern. He didn’t take the black worms. He is pretty fat as is, wondering if I over fed recently.

Thanks, he’s tough. If it’s a cold or flu he will pull thru.

My baby Jan 2007. It sure how old then. Maybe a few years.

Beautiful! There has been days that my fish weren't hungry either and boom a day or two later they were relentless eaters again. Fingers crossed :)

I think we would all agree your baby has been well cared for. Fingers crossed.

I was just looking at that pic from 2007 and him now. What a difference in his face. Fish do physically age other than size. His mouth and head are different. Never thought about that.
