I've often wondered if soaking in vinegar degrades rubber seals and the like.... now your testimony is proving it to me. thx

Here is how I think of it.
If you leave rubber inside vinegar for couple of days..what happen to it?
If the answer is: it melt away or degrade, then I would not want to put it there even for half a day...
Again maybe am paranoid..

What metals and measurements were on the ICP test from that? Would be nice to have a reference for what a rusting magnet will show up as in an ICP test.

I was getting elevated Nickel, cupper and vanadium...

I am the same now after reading a thread on it lol. I am going to try Muriatic acid next time.

Ha ha I think all acid treatments have the same impact. Actually the muriatic acid looks more invasive than vinegar to me...

This a common issue with all of the ecotech wetsides. Still a great pump I’ve got eight of them myself, 4 60’s on the 600 and 4 40s on the reefer 750.

Also I’d rather deal with this than get stray current in the tank which is what almost always happens from other pumps failing.

True, scrub scrub. Which is why I like vinegar far safer with a brush. Regarding Muriatic, I think the issue isn't so much the acid as the organic nature of vinegar. I had a post bookmarked by @Randy Holmes-Farley on it. I will see if I can find it. Stuff kinda scares me though lol.

Definitely don't soak things, in vinegar or otherwise, too long.

Agreed.
When I use vinegar I do not soak, I use it ad the cleaner solution. Dip part in there for couppenof.minutes then take it out and scrub then rinse very well.
I do not do it often thu because I do more frequent smaller cleaning schemes throughout the year. I found it to be easier to clean these heads every 3 months than wait long and deal with all the caroline and old algae..

In situation like this, if pump is not vortech, groud prob can turn your tank in to one giant electric chair(depend on the nature of the failure and the electrical design of the pump of course)....now,...you can do that if you have a killer fish you hate ha ha ha

I was thinking about lube for some of the seals we can get at, like we do for o-rings, might lengthen their life.

Im curious if you had some problems with your tank because of the corroding magnet, or just the icp showed heavy metals.

Just the ICP, did not notice anything yet. I dropped a rowaphos will leave it for couppe of days to help filter out any metal that leached to to the water...
Will monitor and react if needed

I agree with you, and I don't think you're paranoid.

I have extra wet sides and change mine out every few weeks. I've only had the magnet problem once and that was with an older MP10. The problem I'm having with an occasional wet side is the ceramic bearing. That has markedly decreased since I stopped using vinegar to clean. I do still use vinegar on the cages as they seem to be where I get rapid build up of coralline and nothing gets it off better than vinegar.
