Last Friday everything from this 95 gal wavefront tank
IMG_1540.JPG

was moved into a 125 we had. Without telling a long story, basically we're having some big problems with the corals responding positively now after the move.

Zoas and palys aren't wanting to open fully, the devils hand won't open or stand up fully, some mushrooms are fine while others aren't open as fully as they were, most of the xenia isn't pulsing or is shriveled and/or getting brown on the tips, and it's quite puzzling. I feel like we're loosing everything that's supposed to be "easy to keep". All of the fish seem to be fine at this point, along with some of the coral, but we're not feeling good and scared at this point.

The original tank was setup with the three Kessils and a wave maker on two powerheads. The 125 is running T5 lighting and three powerheads with no wave maker at this point. I also haven't setup the skimmer in the sump just yet.

The original water we brought with the livestock was only about 50% of what's in the tank. We mixed up the other 50% with RO/DI and Instant Ocean salt. The salinity is 1.024, no ammonia, nitrite, and the API kit shows no measurable nitrate. Phosphate hasn't been measured yet.

Do we just ride out the storm and see if they recover after the move or do changes need to be made like more flow, rockwork change to get closer to lights, etc?

This is a shot from Wednesday evening.

We've kept tanks off and on for years and currently have a 30 gal setup and running. This has us puzzled and all help will be appreciated.

The lights could be part of the issue. How did you acclimate everything into the new setup?

I suspect that the switch in lighting is a key factor but setting up your skimmer certainly won't hurt. My tank is still recovering after a move over 2 months ago which also included an upgrade in lighting like yours. I went from Kessils to a T5 LED hybrid fixture and my coral are still adjusting all this time later. My tank is more of a mixed tank while slightly heavier with SPS, but most of the coral are still somewhat adjusting to the different lighting. As long as you are slowly acclimating the coral to the new lighting, they should bounce back with time. Sounds like for you there was a lot for the coral to acclimate to with the new lighting, different flow and new environment in general. Good luck and happy reefing! :)

Not much of an acclimation. Just got them out of the containers we moved them in and into the water we brought with us. Then we started aquascaping as we started adding new RO/DI saltwater. So I'm hoping it's an acclimation issue, but I'm afraid it's more than that.

I would raise the lights if you can a bit off the tank for a short time and run some GAC. Softies will excrete chems as a way of protecting themselves when stressed or irritated. Hence moving them they are in chemical warfare mode. You have a tank full and they are not happy, thus irritating each other. GAC is your friend now and run your skimmer, now!

I'm off to buy some GAC and I'll get the skimmer going tonight asap. Hopefully some nastiness will start coming out.
