Hi all,

I'm eagerly seeking some lighting advice. We're VERY new to this hobby and, recently, we purchased a 17.72"(W) x 17.72"(L) x 17.72"(H) 24gal Aquatop aquarium. It came with a LED 12K White & Actinic light. We're wanting to grow some softies and a few LPS corals (eventually). I know this is a common newbie problem, but we have almost no idea what kind of lighting should aim for to grow some of our desired corals (some xenia, leathers, elegance, Duncan, candy cane, maybe even a frogspawn, hammer or torch). We're still in the midst of the early researching phase, so we're not sure exactly what corals we'll keep, but those are some of our thoughts. We're looking for a LED light that we can invest in that will allow us to evolve as our interests evolve (we'd rather invest up-front rather than going: Okay, we want to start keeping LPS, but that means we need a new light). Fish-keeping isn't new to us -we have a large Mbuna tank as well as a planted tetra tank- but we are brand new to reefing. We're both in college so our budget is somewhat tight. We're looking to spend less than $175 or so on a light that will give us flexibility as we evolve in the hobby. Does this give us options? Anyone have any advice on some LEDs to explore? I know this might be ignorant considering the plethora of information on here, youtube, and google, but there are so many rabbit holes to go down and it's easy to get overwhelmed. I thought reaching out to some of the experts here would be smartest and might allow some to chime in with suggestions knowing our specific dimensions and some of our goals. Any takers on helping this newbie out?

It is slightly above your price range, but I would recommend the AI Prime HD, it has plenty of programming to evolve with your needs as well as appropriate PUR/Spectrum availability for all of your listed corals.

Do you have info on the light you have?

A kessil 160 would work. The Ai prime will work well.

Check out Noopsyche k7 pro too.

Cheap you can get 1 marsaqua 165w. They can grow any coral

Thank you all for the input, advice, and help!! Feels great joining such a helpful community.

Well, we took the advice of AI Prime and plunged. It sounds like it’ll evolve with us as we grow in the hobby. The flexibility is very exciting!! I will say that I anticipate we will be completely overwhelmed by this light when it comes in a few days from now. Just googling AI Prime light schedule yields an overwhelming amount of results and there is a plethora of information here too! Any advice on something to start with for the softies/lps as we learn more about programming and signatures, etc? Frogspawn, torch, elegance, and Xenia will probably be our first buys once the cycle is finished. I’ve heard not to run any of the settings above 30% for a softie tank. Is this true? How might we find more information about programming that will help us have success with our first corals? Is this a question best directed somewhere else or in its own thread?

Thank you all again for the advice and help!! We appreciate you guys steering us toward success :-)
