Well.. I tgought I was going to get going this weekend but my dry rock is sitting on a train in Texas behind this mess. Fortunately no one was seriously injured. Hopefully next weekend..
Ok here we go.. got wet today. Now let the newb troubleshooting begin
First problem that has come up is that I'm getting a big surge into the sump from the drain every 10 sec or so. The water level dips about an inch in the overflow when is surges. At first I thought it was the rise in the 1' 1/2" drain line so I disconnected it from the bulkhead on the sump and placed it straight into the sump so it was a straight shot down. No change.. Still surges... My return pump is dialed all the way back. I tried pinching the return line a bit to slow the flow more with no results.
Already thinking I should have used pvc so that I could have easily added a gate valve and more control over the return flow. I have more flex line. I could still add a gate valve onto the flex line. I don't really like the idea of 2 more slip on fittings though. Problem is I glued the fittings to the bulkheads on both the return and drain so changing to pvc would be difficult?? This is how the lfs suggested I do it.
Another issue was a very small leak where the fitting was glued to the bulkhead of the return line. A little thin on the glue at that spot I think. I tried dabbing a little more glue where the leak is. We'll see if that works. If not then I'll try silicone around it. The leak is very slow and runs down the return line back into the sump
Still pretty cloudy.. I really like the look of the tonga branch. However I can already see coral placement will be tricky. Not overly worried about it with this size tank. When I start my 200 gallon hopefully sometime next year I think I go another route. Anyway hope you like.. I'll wait till I'm done messing with my drain issues before I set up the Kessil and skimmer.
Up and running.. got some work to do yet. Still has some "flushing" in the drain. I drilled the exhaust hole at the top of the drain pipe slightly larger. I'm going to add a gate valve this weekend. Rtn pump is dialed all the way back but I think it's still pushing a lil to much causing the flushing.
Quick shot of the sump.. still some clean up to do. For now.. I have the drain going straight down into the sump instead of the bulkhead on the corner. More to reduce noise than anything. When attached to the bulkhead on the sump it puts an S shape in the flex tube. I thought this was causing the flushing but it does it both ways. I haven't done anything as far as adjusting the skimmer yet.
Hey Jim, how much did just your tank cost, and them everything together? Might be interested I'm getting one. How do you like your tank? Have a great night!
Hi Longnose.. sorry it took me so long. Tank and stand were $700. I think I overpaid a bit.. Got the Kessil used/new for $390. Would have to dig to get the total price but aprox $2000 all said and done.
