Ok so hubby and I just got a 90 gallon tank with a 55 gallon sump (a big upgrade from our 50gal we had before this). First the stats then the issues. Lol
Currently in the 90 we have 3 clowns (a bonded pair and a maroon), a large blue damsel, a large domino, small neon damsel, small black damsel, large orange goby, large pink goby, large convict, small goby, lawnmower blenny, mandarin dragonet, serpent star, 2 chocolate chip starfish, 3 RBTAs, banded shrimp, large hermit crab, mushroom frag, Kenyon frag, cabbage frag, 3 turbos, and various shrimps, crabs, snails and other small clean up crew types.
In the bottom we have a skimmer with socks and a section of grape algae and chaetomorphia. LED lighting for refugium reversed from day lighting.
Running 2 120w metal halides for 8 hrs a day and a power compact running 10 hrs a day (light is about 8" above water level). Temp always around 78 deg. 2 dual blowers on either side of tank. Hubby test with API saltwater master test kit.
(If I remember right)
PH=7.5
Ammonia=0
Nitrite=0
Nitrate=20
We carbon dose with 11ml vodka daily. Flake feed at noon and feed marine cuisine at night.

With all that being said...what the heck is wrong with our BTAs????? When we got them they had lovely long puffed up tentacles now they are short and deflated looking. Help!

I'm not a nem guy but how long is this tank running?
What all changes you made to the tank when you set this up?
Did you checked your ALK CAL and MAG?

Bta's always inflate and deflate themselves, how long has it been like that? After they deflate it is usually back to normal within 1-3 days depending on the nem.

Btas hate new tanks and love tons of light. Im using 4 vhos and dual 250w halides on my 90. Is it close to the surface?

PH 7.5 is too low. I imagine that the MH lights are not 120watt since they do not make 120 watt, sure they aren't 150 or 250?

PH is low and Nitrate is a bit high. I try to keep my reef tank between 8.0 and 8.4 but the more stable the better.

I'm also curious about your ALK, CAL, MAG - particularly your ALK.

That said I'm no expert and I'm still learning too - there are others that will have better advice I'm sure.
