Got 3 new acan frags that aren't doing well, getting smaller and showing their "bones"

Is my alk too low?

My s206s were on like 3/4 power blues and half power whites most of the day with the other portion being only blue. The store kept them under full power arctic t247 blues. Anything I can do to help them besides put them in shade and lower the flow or just be patient and let them be? they are in a low/moderate flow area on my sand bed already so if it would be best to just not move them i will.

I read something about an iodine dip may help a receding or decaying acan? I'm not sure about the added stress to these little guys at the moment.

Hopefully they look better when I come home for lunch tomorrow. If not, I would like to try and do something to help if possible. Thanks!

How long have you had them? I've got several acans in my tank all they all took time to acclimate before they puffed out and started to grow. On average, it takes about a week or so, I'd guess? I don't do any acclimation for my corals, however - out of the bag, dip, rinse, and into the DT (usually in a corner to start).

Acans - even once acclimated and healthy - will still reduce down once the lights go down. Every night seems different; sometimes they reduce down to the "skeletal structure", others they just get much less puffy. They almost always send out small tentacles around the edges (feeding, I think?).

My alk is around 8.2 last I measured it and my acans are thriving, so it's not that your alk is too low.

Unless they've been in there longer than a week without change, I wouldn't take any drastic action, myself. I'm sure there are others here who may have some more knowledge of acans than my anecdotal type...

Thanks guys. Ill try and take a pic when I get home but you guys made me feel a lot better about it.

Here are 3 pics. I moved them farther from eachother after the pic because they were too close together and have holes around the container as you can see. I put them there because the french angel was picking at them although i am pretty sure it was picking at the algae on the frag I figured to minimize stress as well as reduce the flow and light anyway so it wouldn't hurt. I also blew the sand off of them.

I will try that when i get home. I have not see their tentacles so i did not try and feed. I didnt expect them to be plump and fat when i got home but I didn't expect to be afraid they were all going to wither away either.

Definitely try to feed them. Might have to check when the lights go off for the night. Eventually you can get them to respond to feeding in the daytime if that's what you prefer.

Thanks, ill try and feed them tonight when the lights go out. I just didnt see their tentacles last night or i definitely would have spot fed. Will update later.

If they don't have feeding tentacles out you can carefully touch the food to them and more times than not they will all realize its time to eat. I use a variety of foods including fish food, but my goto is smashed up krill for every mouth.
If you have any shrimp though they will cause problems during feedings.

Thats great advice, I will definitely let them know its feeding time tonight and see what happens!

Can I see your acans?! :D

Here are my old acans. Unfortunately I sold them when I moved but as soon as my new build is complete I'll be getting a lot once again. I hope to have the new setup running by the beginning of April.
Bottom one is Acan Echinata

Awesome man! I hope mine look like that soon :D

Are you feeding them? I would feed each mouth.

Yep definitely feed, I have been having issues with mine and found out my bicolor angel was picking on them. Removed them from DT and they are starting to recover, getting some PE but not much color back. I fed today thinking now that I see polyps it would be a good time. I have picked up a few others since having the issues and those went straight to the frag tank and look awesome. So it was definitely bicolor picking at it.

Here are mine. The first pic is one I just got a week ago.. it's still getting happy. The second one is my other frag chowing down on a huge piece of mysis.

Sorry the pics are horrible. Acans are the hardest corals to take pics of for me. I will try to take better ones tomorrow when my white lights are higher.
