Getting back into the hobby from being completely out of it for 10+ years and WOW has stuff changed. I stopped into the LFS to show my 3 year old son the colorful corals and it def peaked my interest again. Not to mention someone to share it with now.

After a quick convo with the owner, I was shocked how the hobby has gone away from O nitrates as a standard. I remember chasing them constantly with water changes. I also was surprised to hear the white light blue light discussion. I remember blasting 250W (x3) Metal Halides for 8 hours a day and supplement with Actinics. LEDS were just coming into the hobby but they were really pricey. One thing is for sure, coral (SPS & LPS) frags didnt get any cheaper!

Welcome back! Now we do REALLY dumb stuff. Lol. LEDs are still pretty pricey and a lot of people are going to tell you about all this fancy high dollar equipment...but the truth is this is a great DIY resource and you can do this without a 2nd mortgage. But don't listen to me, I just bought a 400 dollar algae scrubber instead of DIY'ing one.

The main issue with keeping nutrients at zero is that we all got plagued by dinos somehow in the last decade. We've been working so hard to take these tanks down to the smallest detail and we kinda mucked it up.

BRS on youtube has some great resources for info, but don't buy too heavily into the equipment side of it. Also, the classifieds here are your friend! Great deals all the time.

Hi Tim and Welcome (and Welcome Back)! Glad you joined. Its such a great family hobby. Your son will learn a lot helping you. Maybe he will grow up to be the next generation's Martin Moe!

Have you considered starting your build thread? I found its a great place to document my tank's evolution for myself. I wish I had started while in the planning stage, which may be right where you are right now. I started tank first then joined, so I'm still finding myself going back collecting pictures & updating historically as well as current state. Once you create your first post in your thread and link it to your account, they will give you build badge (look left, under my ID)

This is a good reference book type online article I still review:

Lights have changed and are changing still.

I started back with undergravel filters, and growing Aptasia an accomplishment. Quit in the late 70's and stared up a gain 2 years ago.

Welcome to forum and hope you jump back in to keep your son interested.
