Ok so way back in the day when i had plenty of money and no time i tried saltwater with a 125gal tank.FOWLR and was a total failure because i had no time to take care of it. To busy chasing girls, working, drinking. Had alot of fun but the cool SW tank suffered and went away.
Now that im older wiser, married, have plenty of free time and less money i want to start a tank again:) Gonna be a slow build as the better wiser half has gave me a budget of $100 a month for the tank. Im ok with it as it will make it slow and hopefully done right this time as i learn and understand!
So here i am.
I have a new 40B and a new 10g for a sump. (PetCo sale)
Plan is to buy most of the equipment used. Ill need a new RO/DI unit though as that is probably one of the most important pieces of equipment for a successful new tank. The rest can be used if i can find it.
Once i collect up all the equipment i want to finally set it up with ONLY live rock about 50 lbs. Let the rock cure and cycle the tank. Oh and a sand bed.
After a water change or two during the rock curing stage ill start killing any aptasia i find. Set up a bristle worm trap and trap any other unwanted hitchhiker i can find and add a clean up crew.
After that the plan is to add copepods and let them get established and multiplying.
Next will be my most desired fish. Yes a Mandarin goby. Pretty boring and lame for some but i just love em:)
After that will probably be a Flame Angel. After these two fish i dunno probably not to many as i want to keep the bio load small.

So for equipment i want to start with the light first and im looking at this one.
http://www.fluvalaquatics.com/us/saltwater/aquarium-lighting/series/marine-and-reef-2/
It's affordable for me and from what i can tell it looks like it should support some low light corals.
Any better choices at this price point?
Next would be a return pump. From what i have read 250GPH is about right for a 40B?
Protein Skimmer will probably be a SC-301 new or better yet a good used one And finally for now what would be recommended circulation pumps inside the tank?
Thanks and i await you reply's !

Welcome to R2R! It's great to have you here. I don't know about the light, the only fluval light I've owned was only good for a refugium light (which it is currently serving as).

Welcome to R2R!! Make sure there are a lots of pods (copepods) before you add the mandarin, one of my favorites too. You may also have to constantly add pods as that's all they eat.
Bristleworms are good cleanup crew but they're not pretty.
You can get Koralia pumps for circulation, reasonably priced. Amazon has them also.
Good luck with the tank!!

Well keep in mind 240 gph pump isn't going to cut it due to head pressure loss your probably gonna want something around 500-600 gph and this will depend on how you set up the sump how much and what size pipe elbows valves ect. There are some web sites that will help you determine your head pressure once you figure out how it's plumbed. As far as circulation pumps you can find info from the manufacturer what they reccomed gph for size of tank. This may it be the info you were hoping for but the best thing I've found is visit these manufacturers web pages and inform yourself r2r is a great start

Hi. Yes that is why i am seeding with copepods from the start before any fish even go into the tank for at least a month and am prepared to do what ever i have to too make sure he has the best chance to not only survive but thrive.
Bristle worms are good but i do not want to be over run with them this time!
Im pretty sure most pumps work as intended. I just want to find the right size for a 40B. Im thinking 4 small ones, two on each side and two in back pointing forward?

Yes you are probably right and i should be looking at 500/600gph pumps that are adjustable.

Thanks. I have been doing tons of reading already and watching youtube vids. After looking at a few forums it was a easy choice to join this one because of the large membership and knowledge that is abundantly shared.

So this weekend i will be buying my light. Being the most expensive piece of equipment i want to get it out of the way first. Going to need to shop around and find the best price as penny pinching makes ya do that.
Ill report back once i get one. GEEZE i already can't wait to turn it on and i have not even ordered one yet:)

Welcome fellow 40B member. If you are looking for lights. I have a JBJ Trinity T5 4x39w. Throw some ATI bulbs in and you are good to go for growing many corals. IF you were to go that route with a glass top. PM me and I will show you a simple modification you will have to do. The leg brackets over lap the frame and you can't lift the glass.

Welcome home, you will love it here!

Post pics of the 40B and keep us all posted with your progress! :)
