When I was young I wanted to be a marine biologist but my mom said no. "You are to be a doctor and that's that." Well, neither came true but I never lost my love for marine life. Living in Oklahoma makes it very difficult to enjoy the ocean and all its wonders, so I thought that a saltwater tank would help with my fascination. As life went on things always came up (Mortgage, cars, kids etc...). Recently things finally broke lose for me and I was able to get into the hobby. I purchased a 125 gallon reef tank with all the goodies and began my research. My tank has been up and running for about 5 months now and I thought I was doing everything right. Water chemistry was good, sand and rocks were coming to life, I decomposed some shrimp in it a couple of times. I watched the ammonia and such rise and fall just as I should before adding any creatures. I added a clean up crew and a couple of Clown Fish, my 7 year old daughter HAD to have Nemo and Marlin. You know how it is. Anyway, I bought an anemone about a month ago. I talked with the guy at the LFS, told him how old my tank was and he said everything should be fine. Well it's not. My anemone now looks sick and I am reading that my tank is not old enough and I should have waited at least six months to buy one. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can save this little guy, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't want him to die.
Anyhow, I am really looking forward to being a part of this community and would like to say thank you in advance for any advice and help that you all give me.

Do you have any pictures of the anemone? Also, what type of anemone is it, and some more info about your setup will help (lighting type/model, powerheads, other equipment, etc).

And Welcome!!

Welcome to R2R! I know we have some wonderful people on here that can help with your nem. This is a great place to come for all your info. Always double check what your LFS tells you before purchasing.

Welcome to R2R!!! A picture of the nem and a list of your parameters and some more detail about the tank like lighting may make it easier for us to help you with the anemone. Lots of very knowledgeable reefers here willing to help.

Welcome to R2R

I believe it is a Rose Anemone. It's very difficult to get a picture of it because it is tucked up under an arch that I made with the rocks. During parts of the day it pokes its head out into the light and other times it just hangs there all shriveled up looking. When it has its head out I can feed it, which I think is a good sign.
125 Gallon Reef with 2 overflows
Coralife Super Skimmer 220
40 gal sump
1350 gph return pump
2 - 400 gph powerheads at either end of the tank
pH = 8.0
SG = 1.023
NH3 = 0
NO2 = 0
NO3 = 0
I have 2 36 inch current usa orbit marine led. What specifics do you need to know about the lights?

Welcome to reefing from another Oklahoman, unfortunately living in Ohio.

If it is a rose bubble tip anemone, they do often go through strange phases. Is the mouth hanging open? Has it lost any tentacles? Is it attached? Was it attached at the LFS and if so is it still attached to the same object?

As far 6 months goes, that is a general guideline for stability. Anemones need stability which normally comes with a mature system but there is no timer in your water which dings and says it is ok for an anemone now.

Try to get some pictures any time it changes its mood, wadded up, hanging, etc. Watch out for your powerheads if it starts to detach because it may float into one and get shredded.

Keep us posted

WoW, Thank you for all the welcoming replies!!! The mouth does not appear to be hanging open, it has not lost any tentacles, it is attached and was attached at the LFS and it has moved around quite a bit but hasn't in the few days. Water temperature hangs around 78 to 80 degrees.

*Welcome to Reef2Reef @Smoothaleing !* Hopefully your anemone is in better shape at this time.
