Good morning,

I have a 65 gal drilled tank with a 20 gal sump. Right now there are 3 small fish, a couple of shrimp, and two new Anemones.

I've had freshwater tanks for a long time; however, I decided 6 months ago to start a saltwater. I did a fishless cycle with ammonia and all has gone really well. A week ago I purchased 2 Anemones and feel a little out of my depth. One is hiding under a rock and will not come out. The other comes out during the day and crawls in his rock at night. I have two different lights and need options on which would be best, or if I need to purchase a different one? The first is a 36" Odessa with three 10,000K florescent and 3 actinic blue florescent. This light ups the temp in my tank from 77.4 to 78.4 during the day. The other light is a CURRENT-USA #4102-O 36-48" Orbit Marine LED V1 / Saltwater Reef Lighting System. It doesn't appear to be as bright as the Odessa; however, it is much cooler.

I would appreciate any help an/or advise you're willing to give.

Thank you

Penny

Welcome to R2R Penny! It would be helpful if we knew what kind of anemones you have, also if you could include some pictures that would be great!

Hi there,
Thank you so much for your reply. They are both rose tips, hope that's right. Pictures would be really hard. One is under a rock and one is on the rock in back of the tank.

Im not sure on the led if it can sustain the coral...but i have read a lot of horror stories of the odyessas catching on fire....

REALLY?? Haven't heard that. Perhaps another LED added to the existing one? I don't know if it matters but Anemones are the only coral I'm putting in this tank.

Welcome to R2R! Might be helpful to give us some info about your tank, size, depth, where in the tank the nems are at. Might want to post water params and any pics if you have them.

!!! Welcome to R2R Penny !!! Water parameters will be key for anemones but also how mature is the whole system. I got a Bubble tip anemone after 2 month I start the tank and disappear on the rocks, I mean gone. Now I have two rocks anemones and a long tentacles anemones that are doing good but has been almost a year that I got my tank running.

Good morning,

Tank is cycled and running for 6 months. Checked parameters this AM.

Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = showing just a little
PH monitor reads 8.2

Again with these leds, sigh. They're sadly just not strong enough to really do anything.

Parameters looks good. Do you have a picture of your tank?

Thank for your response. Could you please tell me what I should get for my tank? I'm really lost here and want to do this right.

It is 23" tall 3' long and 18" wide

You're looking for something that can provide Approximately 200 PAR at the level the anemones will be at. There are an infinite number of options to do so. In the mean time your T5s are better than your LED option.

Thank you for your advise; however, could you tell me what YOU would use on my setup? The infinite number of options really is over whelming for me.

Since you seemed to be overwhelmed what works for me, would probably not work for you as I tend to be more of lighting nerd.

I would highly recommend getting a T5 fixture in your case. The quality and spectrum of the bulbs themselves can make a big difference. If you currently have a cheaper 6 bulb T5 I would run something like Blue+, Coral+, AquaBlue Special, Actinic, Coral+, Blue+.

I would at minimum get new bulbs for your current fixture and look at upgrading the fixture itself when you can afford it.

Other basic light combinations for T5 that are known to work well are 3B+, 3C+ along with 4B+, 2C+ if you want a more blue look to the tank.

So upgrade the bulbs first, then look into a quality fixture (Geisman, ATI...etc)

2 AI Primes or 2 Kessil A360, or Razor XR5 150w if you are wanting to go full LED.
