is there any reason to start a coral on the bottom if I know the PAR around the tank?

Just got a new ap700 + PMK and a monti cap..

i put the monti cap where the PMK is reading 250+ Par.. would there be any reason to start it off at a lower par?

Depends on what the coral was grown under. And it's both a par issue and a spectral issue. Your light may not put out the same spectrum as the lights it was fragged and grown under. Even if it's the same brand light, where you got it from may run a different spectral color than you do since they're all about growing coral and run it under high blues and at home you add in more whites for viewing purposes. On top of that the coral is stressed out from the trip, and blasting it with light right away can stress it out even more. Always best to run an acclimation program with any new corals :)

I keep the lights more blue.. i dont like it too white at all..

the monti cap i got today was under some kinda LED.. not sure the exact brand..
my sunset monti has been on the bottom for over a week now.. under a 360a at about 80%, the par down there under the 360 was like 170s.. when i bought the sunset monti it was under a bunch of 360s.

i moved my sunset up to a spot with 250+ par and the polyps now are wanting to show more.. actually.. looking better in the new spot.. the new monti cap i got is on the back wall midway up.. that area is around 250s par..

i really like that par monitor.. at least you can be in the ballpark with coral placement..

i tried a monti cap back in the day under my old light setup. it grew but the color faded alot.. then i did something wrong and it fizzled.. i really just want a nice growing montis..

im liking this light.. i was able to see 300 PAR on the bottom.. probably gonna move that sunet back to bottom once i see it start to show more polyp.. tank is BB, and i want the sunset to encrust the bottom glass.

Moving corals is also stressful, so I'm not such a big fan of acclimating them in this way. They need to reacclimate every single time they get moved.

If you know for a fact that the light is quite a bit different where they were purchased, then you can account for that and a certain amount of acclimation can be right.

But if you were buying frag's and their light was at least simikar to yours, they tend to be extremely adaptable. As long as you're able to get them into similar light and not something that is much much brighter, I would really like to place them permanently as soon as I get home.

If you are new at this, hopefully you are only doing this with one or two curls at a time.

It would also make sense to speak with the coral vendor about their lights versus guessing at their lights up. Even if they do not have a meter they can download a Light Meter app for their phone and get you a reading that will be useful.
