i picked this gig up yesterday from a lfs. reportedly someone local had it and turned it in to the lfs because it was moving and stinging their coral. no worries.... i have a spot for it :)

updated pics from this morning. it looks pretty good, imo. i have not seen it deflate yet, and it is amazingly sticky! the mouth is gaped open maybe 1/4 - 3/8" though. i will leave it in qt for a week and observe. thoughts?

wondering how the colors will look down the road... do you think the white is bleached and will turn blue later?

Wow what a beauty! Where did you get him?

He's very healthy too!

I just picked up another one about a week ago.

thanks! picked it up at a lfs. i have found a couple locally lately. i'm seriously stoked to find a blue one. i'm hoping it does well....

I'm excited for you. What a beautiful blue he is too. A gig is the hardest anemone in the world to stabilize IMO, and all are different. Some seem to be more hardy than others. When they're being treated, they like very PRISTINE water conditions. They respond better to Septra DS, but will do ok with Cipro too. I only treat them with Septra now. After they get acclimated and stabilized, they can be pretty hardy surprisingly. Best of luck with him. Please keep me updated on progress. Stoked for you man! Been wanting that color blue for a while. My friend Minh had one that color, he was really nice.

thanks man! i'm stoked myself :) i had seen blue ones online, but never in person until i found this one. i'm hoping and praying that it does well.

i also have some septra, but i figured that i would start with cipro since it looked so good. the mouth is gaping some, has expelled a few pellets, but is staying inflated. i figured i would give the cypro a try for a week, and go from there. i have been performing a 50% wc every evening with medicated water.

here is a pic from this morning. the foot is inflated some. thoughts?

Looks good. I never start with cipro anymore. If they quit responding to cipro and you try Septra as a 2nd drug, they never seem to respond.

I would do 100% WC's and dose after each. Keep the water crystal clear.

Always Septra first on a gig. They always do well with that drug.

When I say crystal clear water...I'm not kidding. It needs to be PRISTINE. Make sure it's aged 24hrs, temp and SG matched.

Too bad those are so tough to keep alive, they are stunning.

reefaholic, bummer that blue gig didn't make it... i haven't lost a gig yet, but i only recently acquired a couple gigs, and i know it will happen at some point....

on the other hand, the same lfs has another gig. a buddy sent me a pic. the lfs is still stating that the gig is a haddoni and vice versa. the guy from the lfs was insisting that ""i would be better off getting this "gig" because they won't eat my fish."" the one he was trying to sell me was a haddoni and i'm 100% positive of it. these are the same people that insisted the blue gig in the pic i posted previously is a haddoni. i wonder how many haddoni they have sold to people who didn't know and were misinformed??? smh

If you haven't lost a gig then you haven't kept many yet. :-)

They are the hardest nem on the planet to stabilize, but like I said before, once you stabilize one they're fairly easy to care for.

Look...most LFS, Wholesalers, employee's of most places cannot identify an S. Gigantea. This is great though. A Haddoni is a lot cheaper in most cases until you get into blues or neon greens. If this is the case and you've found a nice blue gig that they're trying to charge $600 for calling it a haddoni, just point out the main identifiers of a gig. A gig will always have purple/blue verrucae & colored foot. Most that I've had either have blue or green foot, but it can be other colors too.

Rule #1 :

Gigs are like gold! If you see one in an LFS, bag him immediately! They are very rare most of the time, ship horrible, 9 out of 10x- they require antibiotic treatment, and very few people have a stabilized gig. In fact, some that do just go extremely lucky and have no clue just how fragile this anemone can be especially in the acclimation stages.

Rule #2 : If they call the gig a Haddoni you quickly say..."Ohh, well I like that little Haddoni, please bag him for me."

The one I have now sold as a mag. $120

I walked in the store and my jaw dropped when I saw him. I said how much for your anemones? "Ahh, the Haddoni is $79, the RBTA is $60, the big Magnifica is $120...."

"Ok, I'll take the big Magnifica please." :-)

Found these 2 at Petco one afternoon. Sold for $29 a piece.

These would normally go for $100-$150, and that's when available because most of the time they're not.

nice mag. lol yah, i have seen nems mislabeled on a regular basis. honestly, i think the haddoni are just as valuable, if not more, to most people. i state that because of how much more likely they are to acclimate and survive. the average person sees a blue gig and haddoni side by side for the same price. if told that the haddoni is much more likely to survive, they will probably place there money on that one. just my thought... personally, i don't have any haddoni, just because they are more likely to eat fish. i also prefer the looks of a nice gig myslef. something about the shaggy carpet look :)

I agree with that, but I've had some problems with Haddoni in a mixed species tank. My mags don't like them. They will sting each other. Haven't had that issue with gig and mag YET. :-)

Check out this pic. Tell me if you think this Haddoni likes this mag next to him. Lol

i can't see any of your pics any more. did you erase them, or is it technical difficulty on my end?
