Okay... so the build I have been planning is under way.
My plan is to use as much of the equipment I have lying around in an effort to be cost effective.
Today, I purchase lumber to build my stand and is why I've begun the build thread.
While there will be some weight to this build, it won't come close to some of the weights associated with larger builds. Initially, I planned on doing mortise & tenon joints which would be glued and clamped. But it would be my first try at doing that type of joint, and didn't feel it was a good idea on such a mission-critical project.
I've decided to assemble my stand in the same manner that I have assembled other stands, all of which are still in use and none of which have failed... I'm happy to say.
I've chosen to use 1" x 4" clear pine (really 3/4" x 3 1/2"). I wonder why it isn't an actual 1x4, but that's a discussion for a woodworking forum.
When given a lite sanding and then treated with wood conditioner, clear pine will take a nice stain finish accentuating the grain and eliminating blotchiness. This is important as the wood trim in the intended room is also finished in this manner.
Off-gassing is the smell you get with wood that has been stained and polyurethaned. Depending on the wood used, this can go on for a long time.
I find that when using clear pine, off-gassing tapers off and is done in about 7-10 days. It is important that this be completed before tank setup as I don't want the lingering chemicals in the room air finding their way into the tank.
I am in the process of cutting my pieces. Once done, I will post pics.
Here's hoping this build thread is a popular one!
Thank you
Dom
