I’m Looking for advice for a new upcoming build... I’m going to be purchasing a Reef Savvy 60x30x24, which will be predominately an SPS system. I’m trying to figure out the overflow and options available to me and what would be the best solution.
First, the sump will be in the basement. I’m looking at around 15’ of head height not including fittings.
I want to run a bean animal setup, with one drain at full siphon. I have around 6” behind the tank for overflow and plumbing but the closer to the wall the better.
The reef savvy 21” ghost overflow has 1” drains. The return pump I’m looking at using (iwaki) has 1” fittings and I had planned on 1” returns back to the tank with a 1” random flow generator inside the tank. Any thoughts on both the drain and return lines the same size? I like this option due to the I’m design behind the tank which will allow it to be closer to the wall.
The synergy reef 16” ghost overflow has 1.5” drains which I originally was planning on using but I like the idea of the longer weir with the reef savvy for more surface skimming. Obviously using 1” returns with this shouldn’t be an issue.
Then there’s the Modular Marine overflow that can go up to 36” but I’m not sure if I really need 3600gph flow and the box on the back of the tank is bigger which would push my tank out further.
I don’t want to turn this into which overflow is better, rather I’m trying to gather the size of the drain and returns and what will work successfully for me. I’m looking for around 5x to 8x turnover rate between the tank and sump.
Thoughts?
