Hey there everyone. I'm new to the hobby, even though my budget isn't all that great I'm trying to purchase items that are not only decent but would still allow me to upgrade to a bigger tank in the future if I so desire.
Currently I have a 80g rimless frag tank with a 40g breeder that will serve as the sump.

With that aside, I'd like to know from you if the Aquamaxx ConeS Co-2 would be a good buy for the set up. If not, mind pointing me out to the right direction?

Thanks in advance, Dio.

I have that exact skimmer on a 150g with a ~50g sump. It works well enough but I would not say that it the most sturdily constructed skimmer I have seen. That would be my LifeReef SVS2-24 for about $100 more. There are quite a few skimmers that will work for your system and allow for a future upgrade, but plan to spend upwards of $300.

Bought the NYOS 160 a month ago. Brilliant skimmer. Pump failed two weeks in and Ecotech sent a replacement immediately. Couldn't have asked for better service. Stuff happens, but CS is very important to me.

I'm seeing people talk about Nyos all over the place, are they that good?

Build quality is awesome
It pulls lots of sludge with perfect foam
It's beautiful
DEAD silent, not even a hum/gurgle
And Ecotech has awesome customer service.

In my experience, they are that good

I did quite a bit of skimmer research for my 60 cube and found somatic 60s made by vertex.

If you use brs and their points it's $190 (with point value). This is the best value skimmer I have seen. Sicce pump at this price that flows 600l/hr air. Pretty much a space saving vertex 130i and uses titanium bolts like or rest of vertex line. Don't worry too much about ratings, vertex is ultra conservative with them, look at air flow and pump quality.

It's been doing an amazing job for me. If you plan on getting a larger tank I would just sell the skimmer at that point and get a larger one. At under $200 you can sell it used for a ok amount and be able to size a new skimmer for exactly the system size you want. I have run too large skimmers (neck size) and they are hard to dial in when drastically oversized and inconsistent in performance.

The nyos 120 is a great looking skimmer, but it's over 2x the price and flows less air.

I have also heard about the Somatic from Vertex. The pump alone is almost as much as most skimmers.. I am waiting on the new 120 version to hit our shores. A little birdie told me they should be in any day, and since I am cycling rock for my new 120 build.......

That said, I have been running a Super Reef Octopus on my 240 for the last 3 years and the thing is a beast. Runs quiet, doesn't use a ton of power and a great mid-ish range skimmer.
There ARE cheap options out there, but I would save a bit more and get something you won't have to replace much sooner than you'd like. I have bought a cheapie in the past, and it was a total waste of $$
