So long story short I've had many different tanks and made many different mistakes. I've got a decent used set up now. A 35 gallon deep sea rimless reef tank with a 13 gallon sump. I have a reef octopus skimmer and a drilled tank for a 5 gallon refuge and hang on phosguard 150. I started cycling Tuesday and have .5ppm of ammonia. I'm curious as to when I should start my fuge and phosguard. Also my phosguard came with a brown media in it. Idk what it is. But when it runs it makes its way through the filters in the reactor into my sump so I shut it off. Thanks for any and all advice I can get in advance.
New but not new to reef keeping.

Think i would wait until the tank got through its paces with ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates before running filtration for it. unknown media i would pitch, even if its the right thing you dont know how used it is etc.

Welcome to R2R. The brown media is likely gfo.
Ive never used purigen so i cant speak to that. i do however run a fuge and a reactor with carbon and gfo. i think id run the fuge first and just monitor, if you see phosphates still then worry about running gfo. carbon seems to be a split opinion, some run it all the time like me, some only periodically on the premise of it removing good and bad, and also those that never do so to each their own i guess.
