Guys,
I am focusing on buying the Rebel XSi 12.2 megapixel camera, but wondering if the soon to be out 50D is worth the extra coin, keeping in mind that I am not a professional? Are the extra features worth the $ to someone that wants really nice pics of coral reef inhabitants and nice everyday pictures?

I am not and will not be a professional photographer, but I like nice equipment. Just don't want to buy capabilities I won't use, but if the extra features would be beneficial to someone at my level, I would consider it.
Opinions greatly appreciated.
Dave

There will always be a newer, better camera around the bend, just as there are computers and cars. You will not win the game of waiting for the best product. At some point, you have to make the decision to jump in and be satisfied with your purchase, make it work for a while, then upgrade as the technology gets better and more affordable.

Once you buy a camera, DON'T LOOK BACK! It will drive you crazy! Be the best you can with what you have until you can buy a better camera that is significantly better than the one you have.

The 50D is releasing this month, so it is not a long waiting game. I was wondering if the additional features, etc are worth it to someone at my level?

The 50D looks to be a great camera. I have had the 10D, the 20D, and the 1D mark IIn, the build quality of Canon's XXD line is FAR BETTER then the XXXD line. (400D, 450D, etc...) The Rebel Xsi is a XXXD camera, and has a polycarbonate body, the 50D will have a Magnesium Alloy body, which will make it feel much more solid. The 50D will also be a touch larger then the Xsi, which may be good, I know it is for me, I HATE the tiny camera's. (I can palm a basketball, I have large hands.)

If the 50D fits in your budget, then go for it, if not, get the Xsi. Just make sure to put your hands physically on both of them, and take the way they fit into your hands into account as well.
