New clam!

I recently just bought a derasa clam at reefapalooza and it is opening wide and has great color. Can the clam move by itself? I think he likes to sit on his side. Can the clam attach itself to the bottom of my tank? Thanks!

I'm not a clam expert, But I thought I heard that if they flip to their side their not happy with the amount of light their getting.

Really? I thought I should slowly increase the intensity of the led to help them acclimate. Should I just turn it to full intensity or should I put the clam higher up?

Clams are meant to be in the vertical position. I can not comment on acclimation to the LEDs, but the clam should be in the upright postion. It's a Derasa so the sandbed should be fine. I would not put it higher and risk the clam either falling or jumping off.

Agreed, Sandbed would most likely be the best spot. So maybe it flipping on its side was because the lighting was too strong for it? Again that is what I was told by a close buddy that owned a LFS around here.

My LEDs are on low right now, do you guys think i should turn up the intensity a little bit?

My clam isent completely on its side, it's not vertical but tilting a little bit. Its mouth is open and it looks happy!

It will find a happy place by itself, flopping around until it is happy with the amount of light and flow.

Yep, I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it decides to do a leap of kingdoms off a rock or anything

If it were my clam I would prop it up to a more vertical position.

Looks fine! Just be careful with that LPS (looks like frogspawn?). It looks awful close by the picture, you don't want anything like that to be able to touch the clam.

Clam mantles are very resistant to nematocysts, so it shouldn't be much of a problem. In the wild, they will literally live on top of corals and next to anemones.

yeah, my clam has had frogspawn and torch tentacles all over it's mantle, didn't bother the clam one bit, didn't ever close up or suck it's mantle in..

+1 it will be fine with the Lps. Local shop has a large 8-10" clam with a bubble tip nem growing on the side of its shell. Been like that for a couple years now lol

yeah that sounds cool.. I've seen all kinds of soft corals growing on clams, but to see a bta on it would be neat..
