Hi all, i am never reefer and just added my 2nd clown to my tank this past Saturday. Everything seem to be doing good and he got along with the existing clown that was there, but last night he started acting very weird. He seems to go vertical head down and eating the sand in the corner of the tank, or we will move and just lie under the rock for hours at a time and i think he is dead. I touch him and he swims off very fast than goes back to the weird behavior on the rock. The day before it look he was nipping at the Green torch. Only think i have notice is that his lips were white and looks like his gills or moving, but not sure if the speed is normal. Since i am super newbie. Thew video is what he started doing first. Than than in one of the pictures you can see him laying under the rock. The picture of him in the corner is one that i took earlier today. This is my first tank and have no qt tank yet,

So i am not sure if this is normal and i am just over reacting or not. I just had the water test at the local store this past Thursday and they said everything looks good. But will be picking up test kit so i can start doing my own.

I also found one of me emarld crabs dead today in the same corner. But out the 2, this one did move much so not sure if he was on his last legs or not. My other clown and crab and snails are doing fine, and there is Royal Gamma, but all he does is hide and i never see him.

If there is any other info, feel free to hit me up and i will do the best i can answering it. 20220323_154719.jpg 20220323_113247.jpg

Not sure what test kit or method the store used to do water test but some will use API kit as its cost efficient for them but also known for false readings.
Regarding clown, no it is not normal and I suspect brooklynella but hard to depict from bright lighting
Is fish eating?
Is it breathing heavily ?
Is the skin color Hazy ?

Thanks for the reply, as for the test kit they use, i do not know, but if you let me know what to look for i can order and start testing myself.
I have seen him eat a little, but it looks like he was picking off food of the bed, and the breathing looks like a little heavy, but compare to the other, and the skin looks fine so far maybe not as dark as the 2nd one, which is bigger than he, his mouth looks like it has a little white around it. I also just notice the bigger one kind of pushing him to get him moving. and we same under another rock out of side. I will go look up Brooklynella now.

If brook - this will help you

At the onset, fish may scrape up against objects, rapid respiration develops, and fish often gasp for air at the surface as the gills become clogged with mucus. Very quickly the fish will become lethargic, refuse to eat, and its colors will fade. The most noticeable symptom of Brooklynella is the heavy amount of slime that is produced by a fish that has contracted this parasite. As the disease progresses, a thick whitish mucus covers the body. This will usually start at the head and spread outward across the entire body. Skin lesions appear and it is not uncommon for signs of secondary bacterial infections.

if it's not nh4 problem then should be fish bacteria or parasite infections(from lfs), dip new fish and c orals before put them into the display tank if you don't have a quranttine tank.

Yea, he starting to sit that top or where the overlfow and not moving, So will need to look more into how to set up qt tank so i can see if i can save him, as he got along with the other great when they first met. I just dont know if i have to cycle new sq tank or if i can jsut add saltwater and just keep eye on the amonia and

Yea, he moving slow, heavy breathing and now sitting at the top near the overflow, I dont have a qt tank, so i need to see how to set up on up, I did see how about giving it a 90 minute bath in 5 gallon container. than i keep reading different things about how to set up a hospital tank,

Thanks for your help

I think you can can add saltwater and just keep eye on the ammonia as you said.

Many people will use a starter bacteria to add and something to bind up the ammonia like AmGuard or similar.

A lot of folks will keep those plastic sponges/scrubbies (like you can get at the $1 store) in their sump so they have cycled media ready for if they ever need to start another tank.

Sorry your intro to the hobby includes a sick fish... learning experience. good luck.

if you can change your filter floss on your DT, you may be able to use that to seed the bacteria in your hospital tank.
I guess just put the less soiled parts in the hospital tank or its filter.

Thanks for the help all, i woke up to find him dead under a rock :(... I am going to take a water sample to the lfs and have them test and than order a kit for myself so i can test in the future. Thanks for the help.

The angle in the video is really bad to see anything, can you try for a video that is more perpendicular to the fish?

To me, the fish seems thin, and is what is termed "moribund" or close to death. The diving into the sand is because it cannot swim properly.

I got a brief glimpse of the other clown and didn't see any real issues with it, so I think this first clown may have an internal disease. If it was an external disease, or a water quality issue, both fish would be affected.

Thanks Jay, I did find him dead this morning under a rock. The other one has been doing great and swimming around. I am sure this will not be the first one i lose as i am new this hobby, but enjoy watching my tank.

Sorry for your loss. Way to keep up the spirits!
Post a build thread when you have a chance!
I think that's the reason (watching our tanks) were all in this hobby!
I like vicariously watching other peoples tanks too!
