hi all,

Just got this pair of clownfish a couple days ago. I noticed that at night I think they are sleeping right at the surface of the water and on top of each other, the picture attached isn’t a good representation. But they only eat a little and only when the power head pushes the food near them. Is this normal behavior?

I have two pairs of clowns in my tank. One pair sleeps like your, right next to the overflow box. However during the day they swim all over the tank. My other pair sleeps separate form one another in the rocks. I guess it depends on where they feel comfortable.

Mine does the same thing, nothing to worry about. That's just where they choose to sleep

Clowns can be very weird especially at first. The sleeping behavior is totally normal. In fact, it's very typical for them to sleep right next to each other in the same spot every night, especially near the top of the tank. The feeding bit isn't anything too alarming yet, since they're still settling in. As long as they're eating something, it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

One thing I always do when introducing a new fish is feeding a bit on the heavy side multiple times per day and offering a wide variety of foods for the first week. It helps get them comfortable with eating in their new home and put on some weight, while they're still stressed from the move.

Exactly what Tiggs said. My onyx Perculas sleep right next to each other by the intake every night going on a month now. Then swim all over during the day. I will say my clowns are greedy little eaters. What are you feeding them? Mine tend to go crazy for anything garlic enhanced like the omega one pellets for example.

I’m feeding them frozen foods

I've never used those before so I can't speak to their effectiveness. But I use frozen brine soaked in garlic guard, after it thaws and seachem flakes, as well as the omega one pellets with garlic and they love all of that stuff. The garlic guard is easy to add to any of that after it thaws.

Okay I’ll give it a try, what is the garlic guard for?

I can’t get any of my fish to eat either of those. I usually use the frozen mysis shrimp and occasionally give them a cube of fish eggs for a special treat. I thaw it in a cup of tank water with either Selcon or a combo of Seachem Garlic and Seachem fatty acids. Both foods come from either of those companies or both. I can’t remember. I have three chromis that practically swim into the cup when I feed. All three of them have swam into my hands to get food! It’s crazy. Keep doing what you’re doing and before long your clowns will be doing the same!

It basically makes the food smell more attractive for them. the bottle legit states for finicky eaters lol. But its just a little something extra to entice them. Usually I'll thaw the brine shrimp with tank water, and once it thaws i'll drain the tank water and add the garlic, let is soak it up for a few minutes, then i poor it out in a low flow area. I don't turn off my power head as from what I can tell they enjoy to hunt the food out as it moved around the tank.

My clowns sleep the exact same way by the overflow they were picky eaters at first too but now bout 3-4 weeks into it they eat anything that go’s in the tank
