Starting my first coral tank. 20 Gal. Looking for flow ideas. Was looking at Gyre 130 or 150 if I can acquire one (they seem to be to come by). If not, possibly a 230. Seem to be the only ones that will fit in the tank. Are they overkill? Can they be run on less than 100% and perform well in a small tank? Any recommendations? Thanks.

That's way too much pump for a 20G tank! I would recommend something like a MP-10WQD. It will give you the control you want and plenty of circulate your tank;) Even a XF130, IMHO, would be too much for a 20G, they're designed for tanks at least 3-4' long.

I believe the xf130 is double the power of the ice cap gyre. An MP10 would be great as well but there pricey. The ice cap is what I have on the 75 and turned down to 20% IMO, would be nice for a 20. I've never tried it on a 20 gallon so it's speculation of course. You would have to turn down the MP10 as well so having controllers makes them ideal for different sized tanks instead of the on/off of traditional pumps.

Thanks for the responses. Salty and DSC, I really liked the idea of the Gyre's, unfortunately, the discontinued models are the only ones that would have fit in the 12" width tank and not have created a typhoon. I think I'm going to give the Jebao a try Madness. The 10 looks just right and seems to be a good product. Tanks again all.

I am running the Maxspect Gyre 230 in my 29 gallon nano. I have it running at 10-20%... anything over that starts blowing my sand bed around. So in a 20 I would imagine 10% would be about all it could stand... lol

Ice cap gyre is exactly 12" so might be a tight fit. The jebao debate is a long one, hopefully it works for you.
