So I’ve been away from the hobby for a while. I had several tanks before from a pico to a Huge Redsea. They were all located at my office.
Sadly I sustained an accident and retired from my work at 43. Sold my practice and moved back to the city where I did my professional education and got a job teaching full time from my Alma Mater!
Long story short I have an island where a wet bar was located between our kitchen and living room. We don’t drink so I tore out all of the cabinetry and thus it has sat for a while.
We have gone back and forth trying to decide if we should rip out the island or leave it. Finally my wife said she thought a reef tank would look good there.

So Monday I said “I want to go to the fish store and look around for a minute”. She responded with “well can I come?”

So we walk in and they say “Hello, what can we help you with?”
“just browsing” I say.
“This one is perfect”. My wife says pointing to a Deep Blue 80 gallon frag tank.
“That one is actually on close out because the company has changed hands blah blah blah so if you did want it you might want to jump on it before we sell it.”
“We’ll take it!” SHE SAYS.
SINKER.
So now I have a much bigger tank than I was planning for but hey. When she speaks I listen. And of course I’m not complaining.
Lots of talk no pictures yet. They will come.
but I do have a question.
the return is in the corner of the tank and has two holes drilled in the base. Deep Blue drills holes then tempers so not able to drill another to set up a Herbie style overflow as opposed to the Durso it appears the manufacturer planned.
for an 80 gallon tank such as this that will be sitting in a central location of the house (so sound is an issue) will a Durso be ok? Or should I use both holes for a Herbie drain and then run a return pipe up and over from outside?

It depends how much flow you have for the return. I have the same tank and it is pretty noisy using a Durso. I ended up doing what you said and used both for drains and the return up and over from outside.

I thought the Durso would be. Why do manufacturers go with it if it is noisy and potentially problematic?
Which drain did you use for your full syphon? The larger?

yeah I dont' know why they set it up for Durso. I agree it makes no sense.
I used the smaller 3/4" for the full siphon and the larger for backup. 3/4" at full siphon pulls a lot of water. I have my valve cut back even. I'm using a RO Varios-4 as my return pump at 100%.

I run both lines as returns and come over the top with the return, but mine is in wall. I wish i had removed the overflow, plugged the drain lines and drilled the side for a synergy overflow.

So here is what I started with

In addition to the 80 gallon display I have picked up a Quantum 120 skimmer, a 1600gph Simplicity DC pump, and a sump so far. Trying to decide if I want to do run a refugium or ATS. I’m leaning towards ATS for space savings.

More progress. I started to remove the subway tiles and then just decided I would be better off just replacing the countertop.

Capped off the water. I debated putting an RODI here but I already have one hooked up in the basement.
I will run my waste water when I do a water change down the drain.
maybe at some point I’ll splurge for another RODI and then not have to carry buckets.

I have similar tank Seapora 80 shallow with corner drain. Small drain for the siphon, large for emergency. Returns over the top. I could go a touch taller on my emergency drain, it is a little finicky to dial in currently. Any lower water level than this in the drain chamber and you can hear the water dropping from the tank into the drain chamber. Any higher and it trickles down the emergency drain. Dialed in it is totally silent.

Add a couple strips of glass on the corner return and you can put a flush cover on. Also a picture of my screen around the returns. The large rectangular front screen slides under the rear screen so you can slide it open about 4 inches without removing.

That’s a really nice set up. I have a question for you. Do you have two return pumps or a single that is split into two returns. If it is one line with a split what does that do for calculating head pressure?

Two separate plumbed pumps for redundancy.

And countertop finished. Now to let it sit for a few days to fully dry. Then I get to cut holes.
