Hello everyone,

im new to this posting thing but have always loved reading what the community has to say about all topics!

I got my new dream reef tank today at a LFS on a New Years sale on tanks. The JBJ 65 rimless. However, upon getting it home I noticed a small chip on the lower back corner. I called the LFS immediately sent them pictures and they insist that I must of happened when I moved it (obviously they wouldn’t take fault for that. We made sure to handle with care.) but they ensure me that it won’t have any issues with the tank since it’s so small and won’t compromise its ability to hold water.

so here I am before I fill it with water to ask you guys what you think! No big deal and I should fill it up or should I try and press a return that I doubt they will do? Thanks for all the help!

Sounds like a standard retailer response but I agree that I doubt that will cause any issues in the tank integrity.

That being said if it makes you unhappy and you're sure you didn't cause the issue I wouldn't let it go. We spend so much on these products and fragile as they may be, imperfections from the supplier should not be deemed good enough in my opinion.

If you think you have enough documentation.... and want a replacement, I believe its only $75 or so to file a Small Claims Court claim under $4,000

Each State varies a lil

File a claim in court and represent yourself with all your documentation. You got about a 50/50 shot. If you lose, you're out $75

I worked for a fraudulent computer shop that assembled and sold crappy custom computers. The Owner is/was a real piece of... and he would get sued once a year and would lose 75% of the time when they proved what they bought was "misrepresented ". Im hoping he's in prison by now. That was 10yrs ago.

I'd subpoena everyone at the Shop thats involved. They see this, they may reconsider to settle out of court

F O R G E T hiring a lawyer bc they want a$2,000 fee minimum

P.s. Was this tank a DISPLAY MODEL? Was it sold As-New or a Floor-Model?

My computer shop owner was fraudulently selling display models As-New and got roasted in court

For sure the frustrating thing is that the shop helped me load it in my car. after further inspection I agree I think it is fine. Just a big hit to the gut when I noticed it and the first thought was 65 gallons of water laying on the ground haha. Well I’ll be filling it up with water to start the new year!

Yeah it was being sold as new. They “assure me” it was perfect when they set it up for sale in the shop. I don’t have any solid proof that it wasn’t like that when it left the shop. I guess I should have inspected it more. I just checked the display portion of it to make sure no scratches were on it but that was it. Lesson learned on my part I suppose

There's the legal route that you seem shy about

There's also the BBB better business bureau route as well.

There's also the Yelp review route where you can post your story.

Many internet routes if your mad at this store to get your story out. I.e. their Facebook page, but they can delete FB. Yelp they can't

Get your story out there and the Owner will prob reach out. Ask for a $100 minimum gift card

Just saying

Did you happen to get the warranty info or card? Maybe there is some recourse from the manufacturer that the LFS could help with. If the tank was on display and not in its original packaging that will probably be a problem though. They could help you out and say the defect was found during unboxing prior to your sale. Which LFS is this? Any chip is worrisome no matter where it is. They should be doing more to help you IMO.

Yeah I’ll try contacting him again and might look into that route!

Yeah they gave me the manufactures one year limited warranty. I contacted my manufacturer today but with it being New Years they have to get back to me. It was an open display they set up so I’m guessing that’s probably when the chip happened. It’s Seattle corals over in Bellevue

I’ve only been there once. They sold me a couple of peppermint shrimp out of a tank that they put aiptasia covered rocks in for the shrimp to eat. Those peppermint shrimp do not eat aiptasia in my tank at all. I was kinda disappointed with that. Hopefully they do you right and help you get a new tank. Good luck.

So an update for y’all, I contacted the store owner again this last weekend and he is still convinced it happened after leaving the shop. However, I talked to the employee that helped me move the tank and he agreed we didn’t do anything on the move that would have damaged it and I found it while moving out of the car so it must have been something they didn’t notice in shop. The owner disagrees. He won’t contact the supplier to see if we can get it replaced. He said that I would have to do it myself. Haven’t filled the tank yet since I’m waiting to hear back from JBJ but I know they won’t do anything about it I’m sure. I have got second opinions from my main LFS and the owner said it’s not a problem and will hold but for an expensive tank it should be flawless and the owner should be doing more even a gift card or an apology.
So now I’m looking for a renter insurance that will cover the water damage in case it does go out and I will be leaving a bad review. So I wouldn’t recommend my fellow Seattle refers buying from Seattle Coral.

Not helping out a customer with a problem on a high dollar purchase is just bad for business. They won’t be around long if that’s how they treat people there. You’ve got 3 or 4 good choices between Bellevue and Kirkland to shop at instead. Denny’s Pet World in Kirkland has an anniversary sale every August where they sell tanks and stands for their cost. I got my IM Lagoon 50 from there three years ago for $438 (retail $600) and the matching APS stand for $448 (retail was also $600 at the time). They didn't stock that tank, they had to order it in and they still gave me the sale pricing, and I didn’t have to pay for shipping either. That’s great customer service.

Thanks for the info. Yeah worst costumer service I’ve had to deal with in this hobby. I’m in contact with jbj if it doesn’t get replaced I’ll end up looking into Denny’s pet!
