Hi guys,

Just bought my first corals and after a dip put them in the tank.
I've noticed my duncan (was told this is what it was in the shop, but was also referred to as daisy?) has these whispy bits coming off of it.

Would someone be able to assist to tell me what it is or what's happening ?

Thanks :)

Strings(spider web strings) with small sphears at the end are usually feeder tentacles. Slimy strings is usually poop. In worst cases slimy stings could be Zooxanthellae jumping ship. This happens when there is a sudden change in parameters which is perceived as unfriendly/stress inducing by the corals. How did you acclimate the coral? Have you Target fed it? Can you see white skeleton?

Thanks for the info.
Might be just a lot of poop. It seems the hammer is also letting some off but not as severe.

Didn't acclimate (LFS suggested rather than messing around with that, just to make sure I did the dip and then plop them straight in and it should cause less stress over all, how true that is I can't say).
Haven't target fed as was also told that whilst you can target feed it's not a necessity so not worried about doing that yet.
Can't see any white skeleton on it currently.

How long in the tank. Coral looks ok, just a stress response on acclimation imo. My Duncan did same for a day or 2, before opening up

Literally just 15 mins or so at time of photo. Sounds like it might be a normal response then
Yes for certain....once it starts to open up, wait maybe a few days and then chop up a bit of a shrimp or scallop from freezer if you have and feed each head the tiniest morsel. The Duncans love meaty small foods.....cool to watch them devour it, and helps with overall health.

Thanks for the advice, will look to try and do that :)

I've had my duncan for 6 years now was a single head and is now 30+. Mine closes occasionally when the water is a little out of whack. Last year was closed for a few months and when I changed salts was back open again. After the new salt ran out i went back to original salt and closed again, all params are the same when doing water change so I am not sure what is in the salt that he doesn't like. All other corals and my clam are fine. Give him lots of time, he most likely will be ok.

Noticed yesterday he was slowly coming out. I didn't actually realise there was so much to him. When I bought him I literally thought it was just a skeleton. Turns out the little guy was just so tucked away.
Was definitely making some progress yesterday. This morning I saw he was out in all his glory, will grab an update picture later tonight when the lights are on.

Well I think duncans can look more bubbly tipped as well. And depending on flow and things they will change their shape and size. Ive seen some with fatter tentacles. As long as it is open and happy thats all that matters.

Thats what it looked like when I put it in the tank.

I'm kinda jealous bc duncans come from Australia so you probably have some nice ones down there.

If it is a Duncan looks like it has a couple of heads should be a nice piece. Each one should look something like this...

Glad to see you have some corals in your tank!
Nice looking piece. I don't know about my guy, he has 30+ heads and had him for 6 years now. He does not like IO/RC he closed up for a couple months, switched to fritz and was happy and open. went back to IO/RC and he retreats. Going to try a different salt.

I wish I had a photo of mine when he was happy, his tips or fingers were like 3 inches long. I have 30+ head colony and looks awesome when fully puffed up.

The salt mix of water i use is from my LFS bc my tank isn't huge. I don't mind going and getting a couple waterchanges worth and letting it sit but they use red sea pro reef salt there. It seems to be fine so far and all their corals in the store like it as well.

Yeah there seemed to be a few in the shop, the one I actually wanted to buy that I saw online had sold, but saw there were other ones, was more of a purple. Then the guy suggested this one as it was a new one they'd started sourcing with a different colour etc and looked quite different and a bit more vibrant so thought I'd try!

That salt is a little pricey, I have been using IO/RC for years with no problem then the last couple years is getting fussy about salt. He is starting to come out now I have changed salt.

The pricey part was my thoughts too but I'm not mixing it and if I'm paying for it premixed its not a bad price. I'm not sure I would pay for the salt and mix it at home. But if I'm gonna buy water by the gallon it better be good stuff lol

I'm a little late to the party, but I would guess that those stringy bits are the disturbed mucus coating coming off of the stem from handling it. I wouldn't worry.
