We got our first duncanop this week. So far things seem to be going well, but I'm curious as to how we will know if it's not doing well or dying. Will it disintegrate like a zoa does when it dies?

If you're doing well with the tank (good, stable alk, Ca, Mg and salinity numbers maintained w/adequate light and flow) these guys should flourish - they are very hardy and quite adaptable. As long as it keeps looking like it does in the photo you're doing great!

yes they are strong troopers these guys! mine are growing like weeds started with three heads bout 3 months ago have 3 more large ones and 2 little ones budding! And my duncan has withstood mistake after mistake not to say you should be lax with them but they will bounce back if given a chance!

Yeah I've fragged mine and sent a he's off into a pile of dog hair only to come back as a monstrous beast haha. Hardy-har-har

What are your water parameters? Also, can you tell us more about your setup such as lighting, tank size and inhabitants?

Params will help is help you a ton, in the meantime here's a story. I sell frags of my Duncan quite often, well most of the time they don't open for 2 weeks only to have evidence of new growth and much larger heads. The coral has to get used to the chemistry, which means it has to release all its internal water and replace it with the new stuff. It also has to get used to lighting. Is your tank brighter? Dimmer? Than where the Duncan is from? Those are what I would consider if in fact you have good stable water
