new fish

i'm getting a coral beauty and blue spotted puffer friday and i have a tank with a clown and angler.Do people with new fish just seperate in a different tank and observe for illnesses or do they medicate for a precation?If so i heard it's not good to medicate a angler but what would you do if it got sick?
