finally bought first fish for new tank, added two clownfish to QT tank. Bought some reef nutrition TDO pellets and mysis shrimp. Havent tried the mysis yet. Fed them TDO pellets and the loved them- only issue, about half of the pellets just sank to the bottom, and a third floated on the surface - the fish ignore these two spots. Any recommendations? better pellets out there that float in the water column?

Yeah, clowns are like that. They like to feed in the middle of the water column. Funny thing, they also like to hunt in the rocks. When they get more acclimated they will feed more areas of the tank.

FYI, pellets are very rich in nutrients. They only need to eat 3-4 per day each if they are an inch or less. Bigger ones will need more. Feed 2-3 pellets at a time, wait till they eat them, then add 2-3 more. I use one of those plastic pipe droppers to feed mine. They eat right out of the pipe. I'm a strong advocate of using live tigger pods for feeding smaller fish. A bottle will last months and the fish love them. They also eat algae and increase the diversity of the tank if they get away.

I have a feeding station that I love. You can drop the food in and it sinks as it melts or saturates.

For the ones on top, stir with an old toothbrush handle to break surface tension, the should sink.

Have some hermits crabs and even a coral banded shrimp to clean up the uneaten pellets and help maintain your water quality

I have a ring/suction cup feeder that I have used in my FW tank. Right now, not feeding a lot of frozen food. Do you think this works better than the plain ring that floats on the top of the water if you are using dry food?

I prefer this style because it works for both. I can drop it in and not worry that it’s not saturated enough to properly sink or that the flow may dislodge any food before it sinks. I’ve not used a feeding ring so my concerns may be unfounded, but the price isn’t extreme and I can use it as a feeding ring if I decide to.

Thanks everyone.

My daughter wanted to do the first feeding, and she dumped a bunch of pellets into the QT, that are now sitting at the bottom - any issue with a bunch of pellets sitting there - ie throwing off my water chemistry?

When my fish are in quarantine, I use a turkey baster to suck out any uneaten food and waste.
