Hey guys, I'm matt and I'm from Nebraska. I'm fairly new to saltwater tanks. Been doing planted fresh water tanks for most of my life. A friend of mine recently got divorced and his wife had a saltwater tank. He had no idea how to take care of it. Right now I'm slowly learning and getting my tang healed from hlle. The tank is a 55 gallon, has a fx6 canister filter and a powerhead. It filters approximately 13 times an hour. The tank has been on tap water it's whole life and I'm slowly switching it to ro water. Recently got my first coral, this tanks been running for around 5 years. Here's some photos of tanks.

This photos has me worried, I have this red growth going on. I was told it's probably cyno algae. The Bubbles are actually from the bubbler behind the rock, the rock has a layer of sand on it. The sand makes it look fuzzy but this is the only place I have this growth and is the oldest piece of liverock in the tank. It doesn't really come off easy. After the red sand comes off I have to flake the red stuff off. I was thinking it was coralline but does coralline spread to sand?

*Welcome to Reef2Reef @Mth281 !* I do not see any obvious cyano from the photos provided.I would suggest familiarizing yourself with saltwater test as this will be important in the long run.You will find that saltwater aquariums are not as forgiving as freshwater tanks. However, the rewards outweigh the obstacles. Also keep in mind that the canister filter will need cleaned on a regular basis. You will learn from the best here so thanks for sighing up!

Welcome to the best reefing forum R2R! Kind of a rough way to get in the hobby, but honorable on your part to try! You would be surprised at how well some of these tangs recover from these diseases/infections/etc... I would suggest high quality frozen food and seaweed sheets along with keeping the best water parameters possible to get the tank turned around.

Welcome to R2R!

Coraline can grow on sand/substrate. I would replace the air bubbler with a powerhead to create more flow. That would help the cyano and the fish!
