hey guys im new here. ive kept chiclids for 12 years or so. ive finally took the plunge and converted my tank over to saltwater.

its a 46 gallon bowfront. as of now i have 11 lbs of live rock and 26 lbs or south sea dry rock, aswell as 40lbs of live sand.

the tank cycled a week or so ago. it has a blue damsel and a 4 stripe damsel as of now.

for filtration im running an cannister filter with just filter media in it. i still need a skimmer i was thinking of the aquac remora s pro hob but im open to suggestions.

im not sure on fish as of yet but i really love the flame angel but i wanna have the tank up and running a while before i spent that kinda money on a fish.

aby suggestions would be great this is all new to me, Mike

I have the remora pro with the skimmer box on my 55 gal. And i love it. I would highly recommend it. Just make sure you spend the extra 30$ on the overflow box.

i was gonna get the box and the drain fitting so i can run it to a jug or whatever. i never had a skimmer so its all speculation lol.

WELCOME The Remora with the overflo box is a great product. I would not waste money on a drain fitting. You can empty and clean it once a week. If you do a reef ditch the cannister it will cause you problems.

If you have room u should look into installing a sump... Is cheap and u can hide your equip in it... Also gives you more range when shopping around for skimmers.... U can build out of a plastic container from Walmart or shop around on Craig for a small used one.

Yeah the drain is a waste of money i only have to dump mine a few times a week and the way its designed its very easy. A sumptuous would be best, but hard to prevent a disaster without having the tank drilled with a bulkhead.

ive thought about a sump but the inside of the stand is so narrow it would have to be a pretty small sump. though i would like to hide the heater. ive thought of getting an inline heater for the cannister.

im gonna go look at the lfs tomorrow and have them check out my water again and see if i see anything i like.

on a side note im also gonna look at an identical tank and stand as my current one. my gf has a 55g freshwater planted tank. she has all my plants from when i converted. my idea is to drop her down to a 46 and have them side by side one fresh one salt. i thought that would be really cool to look at. i do miss the planted tank it looks real nice.
