For a 100 1gallon is a little much. If you want to slow evaporation you can put a solid top on the tank. Also the rate of evaporation changes with how much water is in your air. So if you live in an arid climate your tanks water will evaporate much faster. My 120 gallon system evaporates 2 gallons in a little over a week.
Thanks... as long as I’m in a reasonable range that makes it less worrisome. I have a rimless tank and DRY furnace heat in my home. Definitely will be looking for options to cover the tank
For me it depends on the season and temperature. In the summer with it's increased humidity, a gallon or so a day sounds about right. In the winter, with the gas furnace running pretty much non-stop, it goes up to 2-3g/day for my 120. Screen top, open sump, LED lighting
it also depends on how much air you have flowing over the surface of the tank, if you have a fan or ac vents pointed at the tanks surface, it increases evaporation rates
I have a 150G tank and I was originally running an open top but between the tank and sump I was losing 1/2-3/4G a day. I put a solid top on which helped but then I got the Tunze Nano ATO ( thank you caption contest)and installed it in my sump and now I don’t even worry about it. I setup a 5G jug with FW and I just swap it out weekly.
I read all of these and chuckle a bit. I do not humidify my house air....two first floor large tanks and one big basement sump.... almost 3-4 gals a day of topoff..... Good thing my RODI system is solid.
I live in AZ and lose water through evaporation like crazy in the desert air. So it all depends on where you live. I have an RODI unit constantly filling up my ATO. It is attached to outdoor plumbing/irrigation so that it can constantly fill up as needed -- which is often. I never have to fill the ATO -- just keep tabs on the RODI unit. I also have a lid, which helps a lot.
I have a solid top for my 40 breeder and only use it when i go on vacation or if im quarantining.(cross contaimination)
But i hate using it because of the amount of light it blocks. Especially after some dust and salt creep cover the top of the glass...
My 20 gallon net top was going thru about 4 gallons of top off every 10 to 14 days with my gas furnace running this winter. Now that it's warmed up and the furnace isn't running as much it hasn't been as bad.
Wow thanks everyone that definitely makes me feel better... it’s nice to proceed with confidence not worrying that I’m doing something wrong. Great forum
