Hi all,

I'm new here and migrating from another forum. I've lurked here for about 4 years off and on but figured this would be the right place to start my newest build thread.

I have owned aquariums for the last 5 years and moved quickly from freshwater to marine about 2 years ago. I currently have a 2 year old 75g mixed reef tank with a couple clowns and a yellow tang. Nothing super special, but fun none the less.

This (coming) year we're finishing out our basement and my wife has asked that I take the tank from the living room downstairs when we do. Guess what? I'm going to just go ahead and build a 500g plywood tank instead. She understands it wont be in the living room and that's what matters to her. Win for me!

Look for a build thread starting in a couple months. For now, I figured I'd finally sign up as I gather my final research together before getting started.

Cheers!
Felix

What's up, welcome..
Nice 500g in the basement, sounds like fun, I'd say talk her into 500g in the living room. Sump in the basement

Hah. The plan was for me to upgrade to a 180g in the living room with a sump in the basement. I had been talking about that for something like a year. So, the idea of a fish room was already factored into the basement plan. Now the fish room will just have a large window...

Helloo felix. Welcome ! Your taking on a big build ! I for one am curious over a big plywood tank. This outta be interesting Folks !

Thanks Cracker.

One thing I've already learned is that it's not "cheap" like some would have you believe, but it is cheaper than going all glass/acrylic for the same size. I'm already debating metal bracing (since bowing of the wooden structure seems to be the big worry for most), but luckily I have access to welding equipment if needed. Still finalizing plans... I'm still a little way out.
